Nothing on the telly and can't be bothered with the garden just yet si time for a simple little quiz, especially for the more mature reader:

1.Which ex Dewsbury player has gone down in history as the only person to score a try at Headingley cricket ground?

2.What was the name of the professional baseball club that played at Crown Flatt?

3.Which ex Dewsbury player is guaranteed to be mentioned during this year's Challenge Cup final?

4.Which deswbury player kicked goals at both Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge?

Easy I know.

Answer to question 4 is Shaun Dunford, I beleive, who was once on Chelsea's books. He will have also played for us at Fulham RL.
Still working on the other 3.

Even as a more mature reader I could only answer the last one. I didn't even know rugby had been played on the cricket pitch at Headingley, or is this a trick question BSJ? Sad to say also, I wasn't aware the town has/had a baseball team!

Here's one from me then.

What do Emlyn Hughes and Ryan Giggs have in common (no, not association football)?

I think Ryan Giggs dad was Danny Wilson who played at Swinton at one time. But I think they both looked at being RL players before their football careers took off.

Correct answers. Emlyn Hughes was born in Barrow in Furness, where his father (and uncle I believe) played rugby league. I thought Ryan Giggs was from Salford (father Danny Wilson indeed did play for Swinton)and was torn between signing for the Red Devils (and I don't class Manchester Utd with that nickname)and football; I now understand he is Welsh born.

Not sure if Hughes wanted to play rugby, but he seemed to know a fair bit about it.

Ginger Hughes, father of Emlyn, was actually one of the Indomitables tourists of 1946 although he never played in a test on the tour.

1.Leeds were to play against Salford, the big draw of the time, on Christmas Eve 1938. As the rugby pitch was frozen Leeds moved their posts onto the cricket pitch which wasn't frozen and they defeated Salford 5-0 with Vic Hey scoring the only try. This was the only competetive RL game played on the Headingley cricket pitch.

2. Dewsbury Royals were members of the original Yorkshire Baseball League in 1936 playing just one season before low attendances forced them to quit.

3. Lance Todd transferred from Wigan to Dewsbury in January 1914 causing a great furore amongst the Wigan public. In his first outing for Dewsbury he suffered a serious leg injury which ended his footballing career and he subsequently joined Blackpool golf club as Secretary. Just imagine, a player suffering a career ending injury when making their Dewsbury debut - what a good job such things don't happen nowadays.

4. Shaun Dunford was on the professional books at Chelsea FC (pre Abramovich) and played a number of games for their reserves scoring at Stamford Bridge. He also kicked 4 goals against Fulham at Craven cottage when we played them in October 1982.
Believe what you see, don't see what you believe.

What has not been mentioned is the fact that bsj has an advantage with such as question 1 owing to him being present at the game .

Look on the bright side, BSJ.
At least no one suggested you were present when Mr Todd made his first (and last) appearance for Dewsbury.

Unlikely, STR.
The First World War (or the Great War, as BSJ remembers it) didn't start until August 1914 - several months after Lance Todd hung up his boots.
