Here' part of a press release we are putting out next week about Cents moving to a new venue and a new clubhouse. After 4 different 'homes' in 15 years, we are all hoping that this move is our final one. Pictured below is the clubhouse and the function room.

The St Albans Centurions Rugby League Club are delighted to announce that, after 15 years of sharing rugby union and football clubs facilities, they have now secured their own clubhouse and ‘rugby league only’ pitch. The opportunity to develop the pitch and surrounding area into a larger rugby league friendly venue has also been discussed.

After several meetings with St Albans Council, club chairman Brian Parker announced that the club has been offered an area of land at Toulmin Drive, in the New Greens area of St Albans that is currently the home of several football pitches. Parker said “ Currently the land in question is the home of nine football pitches. We identified that only a fraction of them were being used on a regular basis. When we approached the council with a suggestion that some of the land be used for a permanent base for the Centurions, we found the council very willing to listen and exceptionally helpful. When we met them and explained our senior and junior development plans they couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful.”

The new pitch also comes with an adjacent building that houses 12 changing rooms, 4 shower rooms, 4 match officials rooms and storage areas, all maintained by the council to a very high standard. Head coach Shane Rampling said “We really appreciate all the help that St Albans council and the local ward councilors have given the club. At first it will just be a ‘standalone’ rugby league pitch, but we have already been discussing the possiblilty of copying a nearby soccer pitch, with a fence and footpath around the edges, and dugouts and a scoreboard, everyone is looking forward to this move.”

Now that The Cents playing venue had been taken care of, it was unbelieveable that just around the corner, in High Oaks, they found the New Greens Residents Assosciation were looking for a sports club to share its more that impresive facitities. When committee members from the Cents met the committee from the residents association, the meetings were so productive and convivial that the residents assoc. asked for a new lease to be drawn up that gives the rugby club and residents association joint ownership.

Club president Tony Bottomley said “When I saw the club premises I couldn’t believe it. It is enormous. A large functions room, brand new kitchen, very spacious bar area, with a snooker, pool and darts area as well. What more could a rugby club want? Who could have imagined that when the Cents started 15 years ago, that we would have our own rugby league venue and a superb clubhouse like this to welcome our members and guests to, hopefully for many years to come.”

St Albans Centurions first game at their new ground will be on Saturday 12th February at 2pm when they play a friendly match against Cambridge University Rugby League team who will use this game as a warm up to their Varsity match. However, the fist two teams to play at the new venue will be juniors, when two of Cents junior teams, New Greens Gladiators take on Hatfield Comets as a curtain raiser to the Cambridge game.

Excellent news! Is this a community asset transfer?

I don't think so. I haven't been too involved in that side of things, but as far as I know, St Albans council have several of these 'community buildings' around the city. They have restrictions on these premises that they can only be used by the local community and local sporting clubs, and although owned by the council, they are run and maintained by these 'self sufficient' groups, upon payment of a small 'rental' to the council. We were lucky enough to find a building almost next to our new pitch, and the committee in it wanted to be partners, not landlord/tennants. Happy days

That all sounds really great and upbeat from the club. Hopefully you now have somewhere to call a proper home - your last place of residence at OV's was a bit of a dump wasn't it? I see on your website it says that you have a dedicated training pitch and floodlights, did the club have to sort all this out or did the council help. Can't make it to the Cambridge game but now looking forward to the 2011 season and a nice place to have a drink afterwards.

Can't make it to the Cambridge game but now looking forward to the 2011 season and a nice place to have a drink afterwards.

The OV's clubhouse was a case of 'what you saw was what you got', a big barn of a building, surrounded by mud, with a bar and changing rooms stuck on the back. We moved there because of 'certain promises' which never materialised and that they had 4 pitches. The place we are going to now has a dedicated year round rugby league only pitch, and in March when the sunday league football stops, a further one or two junior rugby pitchs will be erected until September. The floodlights are on wheels so you just wheel them out and plug them in. As I said above, the land was currently used for Sunday league football clubs who pay the council a weekly 'hire' fee as and when they were used. The council recognised the soundness of having a sports team playing on a regular season on a dedicated pitch and they mark and maintain the pitch and clean the changing rooms, so all we do is turn up, train or play and leave. Everything else is done for us, and the yearly price negotiated is better than what we were paying at OV's. I believe it also ticks a box for the council in having their facilities used in assisting a sports club with juniors in their area.
The lads on the committee who arranged all this and went to all the meetings etc, seemed to have covered most eventualities, even the possibility of 'expanding' the rugby area in the future, so we are moving into 2011 with quite a positive outlook - now all we need is last years players to come back

Does the clubhouse have Sky Sports? And will it be staying open for a while after the match for magic weekend?

Thanks Gents, as you can tell we're really chuffed about this - and you're all welcome.

Sky Sports has been ordered and Sky have said they hope it will be installed before the weekend... however, knowing Sky, I can't guarantee anything!!!
If it is installed, we are planning to stay there and watch magic weekend and the girl behind the bar said as long as there are people drinking, she'll keep serving, so Saturday could turn out to be a good evening

Hopefully I'll be able to get a lift home afterwards, otherwise I may have to stick to the local

Brooza, Sky Sports has now been installed, and the plan is for anyone who wants to to stay behind after the game tomorrow can watch Cas/Wakefield and Saints/Wigan.
Hopefully a lift back into town afterwards shouldn't be a problem.

I live in Letchworth, but think I have a lift sorted from my other half.

Don't suppose the place is opening on Sunday for the other matches? I get the feeling I may struggle at my local (just seen that union and soccer are on at the same time as the Rhinos match :()

Yes, the place is open on Sundays. If you are a member of the rugby club you are automatically a social club member and can go to the club whenever you want. Tomorrow, I would ask the girl behind the bar how they are going to sort out who watches what. Have a word with Shane, the coach, as he will more than likely be organising another session on Sunday for the other games.

Last couple of questions :)

How do I become a member of the club, and what does that entail?
Do they sell Smirnoff Ice?

Last couple of questions :)

How do I become a member of the club, and what does that entail?

Club membership usually runs from March/April time for 12 months. Last year it cost £25 and for that you got a club polo shirt, 'special price' on any away coach trips, you can attend all committee meetings and voice your opinions, attend the AGM and vote on the clubs structure/officers. (You don't have to attend these meetings but you can if you want)
Bascically its a way of supporting the club financially, getting a polo shirt and having your say in how its run. You also get invited along to any nights out the lads arrange, but believe me, you have to be under a certain age to keep up. (And if there is any food left at the end of feeding the teams, then its usually offered to members first). Details usually appear on our website or we hand out flyers a few weeks before membership is due.

Do they sell Smirnoff Ice?

The clubhouse and bar really is top notch, I would imagine they would stock such a product. If not we will ask them to, its our clubhouse now!!!.

I'll be at the game tomorrow taking matchday photos for our website. If you want to say hello I can explain all about the club, our set up or anything else you might want to know.
