Sorry, Gary, but you are wrong there. One of them now lives on South Island and Christchurch is their nearest main town.

Thanks guys for your concern,Richard and I are fine.Richard is in Auckland which is approx 950 kilometers from Christchurch and I am in Geraldine 150 kilometers away. The main shakes were felt up to 400 hundred kilometers away.
In Geraldine, we are feeling the strong shakes, its very disconcerting to say the least when the house you are in gets the shakes.Since the main shake yesterday there have been another thirty and after the big one on the 1st September last year they have had nearly 5,000 aftershocks.
We are feeling for the people of Christchurch too.

Hi Frank, didnt realise you had moved, must be pretty harrowing regardless of how far away you are in NZ
Some of the experts over here are saying this series of quakes are actually aftershocks from last year and not seperate quakes.
God bless you all over there.

Gary,The quake yesterday(6.3) was a new one.All the others were aftershocks from the one on the 4th Sept last year.
Not too bad here although it puts the wind up you. It's the ones in Christchurch that are doing it hard.
We came down here for six months and return to Auckland next week.
Would like to thank you all that responded to Fredm message.

You can add at least one rams fan to those dogs fans concerned for your welfare. My thoughts go out to all members of the RL brotherhood caught up in this appalling disaster, and to the people of christchurch in general.

Make that two Rams fans. I spent almost a month in New Zealand in 2009 and visited Christchurch twice while I was there and cannot believe the devastation it has caused and from what I remember of it. I have a friend who lives just outside Wellington and they have been told that an earthquake may hit there sometime before June.
As GOR my thoughts also go out to the people of Christchurch and NZ.

Yes thanks to you and all the others who posted. The latest 'quake was 6.3 on the Richter scale compared with the September one of 7.1. However, much more damage was done due to a number of factors. The recent one was much shallower and secondly the earlier one had predominantly up and down movement whilst the latter was side to side, up to a metre in the Central Business District. It is quite harrowing just seeing the TV footage that you have to limit the amount you watch, especially controlling how much children are exposed to.
On the other side, there is a true community spirit being shown by Kiwis as money is being donated. Especially in Christchurch neighbours are helping each other. Being a University city, 1000 students are mobilising to clean up the streets that have been devastated again by liquifaction (water and mud being squeezed up and making some streets impassable).
