Couldn't workout today's game plan, two good centres and yet we never moved the ball wide, we simply went done the middle all game.
A really poor game to watch both sides were average at best but the Cougars deserved more from the game as they were the better side for large chunks of what was a very forgettable encounter.
Young Lynch went well at fullback, Davies and Jones ran strong for the side and Straugheir was my mom played really well scoring two and running the ball in strong and sound in defence.
Not great watching but it's a win, we lacked flair today maybe it was the game plan just to get back to basics after last weeks horror show at London, if that was the case, then we still have a long way to go as we were second best up front.
A lot to think about, we will have to play a whole lot better come the season start than we've shown in the last few weeks or we are going to struggle.

Yeah not great entertainment but if im honest games against Keighley arent always the best. They are strong up front in your face and normally well drilled. I think if they still had Jonny Pressley they would of beaten us today as their forwards made good yards throughout the game and with a decent half back they would of scored a lot more points.

That said, we did defend pretty well and kept a decent line when they were attacking us. Our kicking game was pretty poor I thought meaning we couldnt get the repeat sets and create any real pressure and suck the juice out of them. We didnt get the ball out wide at all to be honest, but there again the ref allowed them to be offside all game leaving us no time to move the ball. I dont know but shouldnt the experience of CT and 1-2 others be organising so that we run from a bit deeper to allow more time to move the ball in that situation???

Jack Lee provided some of his trademark runs from dummy half creating 1-2 breaks, Sam Lynch did really well and impressed me throughout, Straughier was good, Dennis struggled a bit but was always having to get the ball in-field so little space to run. Thought Belly did well in defence however didnt get chance to run it much in their final third. Thompson was quiet but again never really got good ball in a threatening position. The Cougars ran a lot at Pressley early doors but he dealt with it well. When he signed a lot of people said his defence was really poor but on todays showing he has worked pretty hard on that over the pre season and coped well.

Still work to do with discipline, DW was not happy at all with Esders and quite right so. I hate to think the bad temper he has will hold this player back from moving on in the game as he is so talented. Seemed like his argument was that he was stamped on but of course the old cliche, two wrongs dont make a right will be what DW counter argues with. This must change quickly cos we all know how niggly a certain side is and we cant afford to be men down in league games. A few handling errors and other penalties were given away but main focus has to be wiping out the dumb penalties and unforced errors.

Overall I would give MOM to Lynch ran close by Straughier. A game to forget and move on from really. Next week, hopefully get some points on the board and wouldnt be suprised to see the likes of Ed Smith given a go along with Waterman, Sutton and some more game time for Rhys Clarke who showed up fairly strong today.

Phew......:)

Better than last weeks game against London but not much.

Sam lynch generally went well at full back in his first game in a knights shirt, Ben Jones had a solid game in his spells on the pitch. Struffs took his tries well and Pressley as always showed some good support play. However, most of the time we seemed to lack ideas in attack and we must thank Jack Lee for his creativity, Thorman produced some clever kicks from kick offs and tried his best to marshall the troops. Hope we can build more pressure when the league starts

Not sure what went on with Esders, but Woods must have been disappointed as he didn't come back on after the sin binning.

Re team selection I hope some of the players who were rested/dropped get another chance in the challenge cup next week. It was particularly unfortunate for Danny Wilson to have missed out having played well so far this season, but managed to keep a place in the team last season. It would be good to see Howard, Smith, Burns, Stampy and a few other youngsters given a go next week.

Wins a Win!

First game i have been able to get to this season so can only comment on todays game.
I thought we were quite poor no running onto the ball Cougars showed us how that was done,Cougars looked well drilled and gained many yards in forwards we seemed to lack ideas today would of been a good game to chuck the ball around and try things.
Esders has really got to keep his cool at times.
Duane would of got my MOM today.
Thoyght the referee was ok although he has clearly never heard of offside.
A win is a win further improvements definitely needed.

Offside today was a joke for both sides, it was a real scabby 10 yards and that's one reason why we saw one man rugby as a whole!!

A bit dire today but there again team not settling to a regular pattern, obviously DW still shuffling his deck, good part of todays game were the quality of the tries scored by the Knights.

A lot to think about, we will have to play a whole lot better come the season start than we've shown in the last few weeks or we are going to struggle.

The tight pitch, width-wise, at the HS, when coupled with a ref who thinks that five metres is acceptable for the defence at the play the ball is always going to make for a scruffy game.
Was impressed by Rick Barr ( 20 ) for the Cougars up front and Jermaine was his usual box of tricks. Thought Paul Drake settled into the game for them and came alive once Ezo got binned ( he seemed lucky it wasn't red from my seat ).
Mention to Jack Stearman who worked as hard as ever and thought Nathan Massey was as good as anyone. Struff looked good and his second try was a tribute to his dancing skills !!
Felt sorry for Jord Thompson as he simply didnt see any ball - be a different story at SLS, with it's wide open spaces, I suspect.
DW said that there were no serious knocks but seemed non plussed at the lack of cohesive and penetrative rugby from the pivots.
Loved the second Elvis try, great break from Little Jack and stunning pass out of the back door from Ezo and we proved that we can move the ball at speed with the winning try. Good pressure from CT forced the error and then some incisive attacking was just too much for the Cougars defence.
Would have thought that, given the players he rested and the injury to Gav Duffy, that JD would be pretty pleased with the Keighley display.
Fancied the Hawks to win at Sheffield today and, apparently, Grimmer won them the game with a belting try.

Lethargic is how I would describe us today, apart from the tries our play in general was very average, first 15 mins our forwards made easy yards then for some reason we seemed to turn to one out rugby, awful to watch. CT for me just doesn't do enough at this level ,Presley supports well, his tries were so 'Johnny Crossleyeque' however not sure he will open up too many defences on today's showing. Belly must have been freezing stood out on a wing, why play your danger man out there ? put him an Ezo running together like at Oldham in the semi last season, awesome pairing. Another bad day at the office, think we should play our strongest team next week in prep for SLS the week after. Ezo was stamped on as I saw it happen, just thinking to myself he better watch his hand; 3 men on his back, left hand went down to support himself and next minute wallop handful of studs, hard not to react but so costly.

Great to see the Hawks fans full of it as usual, all that matters is staying up this season so let them have as many non-league games as possible.

As a Keighley fan enjoyed watching the game today.

Here is my vid highlights

Of note several first team players for Keighley were rested today.

Demetriou, Schickell, Law, Pursglove, Duffy, Moss, Cartledge,

If you think you beat a full strength Championship 1 team, I beg to differ.
That said, Keighley reserves played their socks off.

Good luck with your season.

Jonny Pres looked in great form, hope he keeps this up all season for you.
Also Massey is a top signing. Had a very short but dam impressive period at Cougars in 2010

Might as well have put Brett Waller and Nathan Freer on the wings today.Hardly any ball went out wide. Our wingers and centres must have wondered why they bothered turning up.Having said that still had Straugheir as m.o.m. with Sam Lynch showing up well from full back.Very one dimensional today and on the last two showings it will be a long long season. We need to get back to how we played in the first two games and even then improve on that.
At the end of the day though its not what we do in the n.r.c and challenge cup its what happens on the 13th march and onwards. We really need to be firing on all cylinders.Woodsy has already stated that some of the youngsters will get a go next week so its going to be yet more change.Could do with a settled line up going into the Hawks game.Lets hope next weeks game breeds some confidence into the side, ready for that first league game.

As I say we should play our league campaign starting 17 next week to at least give them a run as 'a team', Hawks have been playing same 17 more or less in their games as have most others.

Im sure 15/17 starting at Hunslet will have a pretty good idea who they are and im sure they will be working together in training over the next 2 weeks. I am aware that you cant beat match practice but for the fringe players they do need to be given a chance to prove themselves, so why risk an injury to one of the 14/15 who are in line for the 'jumper' at Hunslet when we have quality in numbers who SHOULD be more than capable of turning over a university side.

The Huns will slaugher us on this performace all these pace men and they never see the ball and why the L is Tuffour first receiever never makes a yard where are the forward running on to the ball not, impressed Woddie poor display poor kicking game and clueless near the line no chance of staying up if we play like this cant see us winning a game .

Not sure what to think after that, more worried than I was about
the league season, in particular, that Keighley were better than
us at doing the very basic things - such as:
1. Line speed in defence.
2. Dominating every tackle - we were slow & struggled to get to
our feet, no kicking out to try & milk a penalty, where as they
always ended up up on their 'front' in position to play the ball.

Next week's team? - good question.
