Exiled Townie has chosen the Photo Competition theme for March and it is "My Street"

Here is what the master snapper says about the theme.

Thanks to all who took part/voted. I have tried to think of a subject that will get more people involved, and have come up with "MY STREET".It can be a photo of anything/anyone as long as it is in, or has something to do with 'your street'.
Hopefully this will allow a few more people to take part in the comp as they haven't got to go roaming around the countryside looking for ideas.

You may post as many photos as you like to gauge opinion, take advice etc. but will be asked to select one photo at close of entries to enter into the poll. If you do not specify a photo then your last one posted will be assumed to be your entry.

Seriously though, looks like a proper caff, the sort where you get a proper full monty breakfast that sets you up for the day!

Right, I'll kick off this month - but my disclaimer is that I barely know what I'm doing. I certainly know what I am trying to acheive with these experimental shots. Any advice from more accomplished photographers are most welcome.

Right, I'll kick off this month - but my disclaimer is that I barely know what I'm doing. I certainly know what I am trying to acheive with these experimental shots. Any advice from more accomplished photographers are most welcome.

Don't knock it, they are pretty good, and always say they were exactly what you were trying to achieve, I do
Here is a piece from a photography website I read, hopefully it can explain what to do better that I can -

There are two ways to capture motion: to blur the moving object while keeping the background in focus or to blur the background while keeping the object in focus:

Blurring the object: Blurring a moving object captures its motion. For example consider a car driving down the road. If you freeze such a scene with high shutter speed the viewer can not tell if the car is moving or if it is parked. However if you use a slower shutter speed the moving car is blurred and the feeling of motion conveyed.

Blurring the background (panning): Consider the same car from the above example. Another way to convey its motion is by blurring the background while keeping the car in focus. This is much harder to accomplish. The concept is simple: set the camera to a slower shutter speed. Pan the camera in a way that it follows the car. The car stays still at the same spot in the photo. Then shoot the photo as you continue panning the camera to keep it aligned with the moving car. The result is a car that is in focus while the background is blurred.

What is the right shutter speed needed to capture motion? Unfortunately there is no magic number. The shutter speed depends on many factors such as the speed of the object, its distance and the amount of motion (or blurriness) that you would like to capture. As a rule of thumb shutter speeds faster than 1/250 of a second tend to freeze the scene while shutter speeds slower than 1/50 of a second tend to result in some blurriness. If the object is very slow you might need to keep the shutter open for even a second or more. If the object is very fast 1/50 of a second can be all that you need. Take lots of snaps at different settings and compare them to each other.

A good shot though, second i think is my fave out the too.

Saw this sort of thing in practical photography ( trying to learn myself too) and think its an ideal technique for this months topic.

Will have a search to see if the Febs edition is online somewhere ( or similar)

If not, I ll bring it down next time I see ya!

Once I ve finished lugging sofas, fridges etc about this weekend I ll try and give it a go too!

My street is about a mile and a half long, so I'm bound to be able to get one or two decent shots from somewhere. Might take my camera out for a walk tomorrow if the light's good.
