Scottish rugby league has, of course, been in the news recently with the signing of two players - Chad McGlame (Hull) and David Scott (Hull KR) - from Easterhouse Panthers. Exciting times for the two young lads, who will hopefully progress to their respective Super League squads, but also for the club itself. Although sad to lose such promising talent it has put the club in the spotlight and attracted the interest of prospective players link

I recall reading a while back about an 'apprenticeship' scheme that involved Cumbernauld College (I think) and I'm sure Chad, at least, came through that. At the time of the newspaper article I seem to recall those involved bemoaning the fact that the lads might end up having to go to union to obtain employment - happily that hasn't the case.

I don't think it's coincidence that these two have come from the Panthers as this is where development support has been in place for longest. The wider support that the game is now receiving will pay similar dividends from other parts of Scotland in the future. There is plenty of sporting talent up here wanting and needing an outlet - not every youngster can play soccer for one of the Old Firm!

Doemstic League

The newly formed RLC Premier League will be made up of the following clubs:-

Ayshire Storm
Carluke Tigers
Easterhouse Panthers
Edinburgh Eagles
Fife Lions
Moray Eels

Playing each other home and away gives 10 games in the regular season plus the usual playoffs (and friendlies and nines tournaments)

Division One is made up of:-

Falkirk
Ayr Knights
Moray Titans
Aberdeen Warriors
Cumbernauld

Again home and away to give 8 regular season fixtures

Fixtures

Moray Titans

Good to see that the club has a place to call its own. They have managed to purchase a set of posts after receiving an Awards for All grant, and Moray Council have agreed to create a pitch in Doocot Park in Elgin (well, New Elgin to be totally accurate) and put a club sign/noticeboard on the pavilion. A real presence in the community! They are to play a pre-season friendly there against Moray Eels. link

Aberdeen Warriors

The Warriors have a new kit for their debut league season (as have the Spartans youth teams) link

Other fixtures

As many of you will be aware, exiles squads have been created in England - Exiles North and South. They will play games against English sides before an North v South trial at Loughborough in April. From this, and following Residents trials in Scotland, games between Residents and Exiles at both 1st and A team level will be played. From this a Scotland Amateur squad will be selected to defend the Home International title won last year. These games, together with students, U18 and East v West Origin rep games and the domestic fixture list will certainly give the keen, talented and dedicated rugby league player a meaningful playing schedule once again. link

Last, but certainly not least...

Even with all the above, the most important news ever to come out of Scottish rugby league is...

...TGG is coming to the fair city of Perth (just a few miles to the east of Methven to those not familiar with the place).

The semi finals of the schools tournament - the Saltire Cup - are to be played on the North Inch (home of Perthshire RU) on 24th March. The teams taking part will be Uddingston Grammar, Carluke High, Westhill Academy and Aberdeen Grammar; a total of 14 teams from 10 schools took part in the inaugural tournament.

And if that is not enough for this 800 year old settlement, a pre-season nines tournament will hopefully be held at the same venue. Pleasure overload!!!

Liking that new league lineup, was expecting 'only' 9 sides so 11 is a pleasant surprise.

Also that means the South West is the only region without a Premier division this year as the North East is getting one as well.
