Very close one to call early season. Both teams going pretty well, played 5 won 4, both qualified for NR Cup quarters and both had easy wins in Challenge Cup. Points for and against very similar from 5 games. Could be down to who turns it on Brambani or Moore. Rams stronger in the pack? Bulldogs a little bit stronger in the backs? Batley home advantage.
I'll go for a tight game with 2 points in it either way 22-20.
Lets hope it's a cracking game and we get some more of this sunshine to bump up the crowd.

Team (and I stress this is only what I'd like to see - I appreciate it won't actually happen!):
Preece, Darren Williams, Daley Williams, Maun, Reittie, Mennell, Moore, Smith, Handforth, Hesketh, Manning, Bretherton, Lindsay.
Bench:
Hodgson, Martin, Lythe, Tootill
(and that's leaving some very decent players out of the 17 altogether!)

No Walton ??? No Brown ???
Well its a certainty that Lythes will be banned this evening so he is out.
You would expect that Handforth will be playing hooker.
Ash lyndsay is almost certainly out with a knee injury.
Preece / Campbell
Reittie
Williams
Maun
Brown
mennell
Moore
Smith
Handforth
Hesketh
Walton
Manning
Bretherton
subs;
Martin
Robinson
Hodgeson / campbell / Preece
Toothill

I would keep Rettie & Brown on the wings and Preece at fullback.
Players playing against their previous club always gives them a little extra in the tank, but I don't think Robinson is back to full match fitness. Handforth at Hooker. always look forward to the derby games against the old enemy with some nerves, but I know we are too good for them.

Do we need Hodgson now that JC is back on board? Has he trained with us at all - if not then there is no way I would include him if he doesn't know the plays etc.
I bet a few teams in our division would like to have the choice of Preecey or JC at full back.
Also surely Robinson won't be considered - wouldn't have thought he is anywhere near match fit having just had the 20 minutes or so against Fryston.

Like I say, the squad at the minute means we do have to leave some good players out. Personally, I wouldn't have Walton ahead of either Bretherton or Manning at the minute on current form and I've been more impressed with Darren Williams than Brown so far. I'm only going on current form and I'm sure that the 17 I'd pick in three months time would be completely different! If Ash is out then Toohey probably deserves the nod at 13, IMO.

Personally, I don't think Campbell's anywhere near his best at the moment - I'd have Preece ahead of him all day until he regains proper sharpness. But again, just my opinion.Do we need Hodgson now that JC is back on board? Has he trained with us at all - if not then there is no way I would include him if he doesn't know the plays etc.

wouldent be same derby without toohey, and preecie too for me over jc.
i think were just about clicking and a bit a sunshine will work wonders for our pacey lads so am going 34 - 22 to the dogs, baz man a match.maun and reittie to run em ragged and tiger and moore to baffle them along the way. robbo to get 10 minutes

I agree, this match will be a million miles away from the January encounter. My worry is that we underestimate them, ,as I think they are pretty strong at the moment. I have a sense of dark foreboding.

Going to be a very, very close game this. It might just be me, but somehow Dewsbury always seem to have a slight edge over us in terms of aggression (especially their pack), and its something we need to overcome if we're to come away with the points. If Hesketh, Martin, Tootill etc.. are in the zone and ready for war, then I expect us to come away with 3 points. If not, then its going to be difficult for us to build a platform for our talented half-backs. If we let their pack get on top, then Brambani will kick us to defeat.
What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world: culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog, know what I mean?

does home advantage count anymore?
The recent 'form' of both teams should make for a cracking fixture and a win will undoubtedly give either club a positive approach to the start of season....
both KH and WJ will of penciled in the game importance and must win mentality.
With the Leigh and Hunslet cobwebs being swept away and with the gateshead/ Fryston training games under our belts:-
Batley 29
Rams 20

I think the 2 teams will be the strongest we have seen in a Derby for an awfully long time. Its really tight to call.
I think Karl has some very tough choices to make and its a positive thing. Walton has bad hands but was Man of the Match in the League Express on Sunday. I wouldnt have Potter in my 17 but Karl seems to rate him. Do you pick Jonny Campbell or not. Has Darran Williams done enough in the trial games to warrant a contract and starting place (I think yes to contract), which half backs do you start with. Who else is on the wing. I think Toohey is in fine form at the moment as he is running the ball hard and tackling like he used to and has now played 9 games without an injury which is all too rare compared to recent seasons.
For what its worth I would go for:
Preece, Campbell, Williams, Maun, Reittie, Handforth, Moore, Hesketh, Lythes, Smith, Manning, Bretherton, Toohey.
Subs: Lindsay, Mennell, Toothill, Walton

Moore got man of match in both papers I got (Weekly and Express) ??? Think they said walton was the 'gamebreaker' but he did have a good game after his two or three early knock ons. Dont think he will have to worry about which halves start because Lythes will be banned tonight no question.

I think you need to read League Express again, Walton was actually the Gamestar which is generally given to the best player on the field and I would say it supercedes the Man of the match award. The gamebreaker on the other hand was actuslly Gareth Moores interception.

Very tough game, with both teams on form. I think we've got the slight edge in creativity but need to cut out the unforced errors and at times ill discipline, otherwise Dewsbury's organised and structured approach could really make us pay, not to mention Brambani's kicking game. Still im feeling confident
, so will go for Batley 22 Dewsbury 14.
Team would be:
Preece
Campbell (thought he looked much sharper on Sunday and just edges in front of Brown as he's a bit 'safer' hands wise)
Williams
Maun
Reittie
Handforth
Moore
Smith
Lindsay (a bit left field, but could do some real damage darting from dummy half, especially as their big pack starts to tire)
Hesketh
Bretherton
Toohey
Manning (looked excellent with ball in hand - the pass for William's 2nd try on Sunday was a cracker)
Subs
Martin
Walton
Toothill
Mennell
Darran Williams v.unlucky to miss out - well worth a contract and very close to a starting spot in my opinion
