Oldham crush Gateshead

Winger Mark Brocklehurst ran in four tries as Oldham steamrollered Gateshead in a 66-12 Co-operative Championship 1 victory.

The home side opened up a 30-0 lead at the break and Gateshead had no answer to their finishing. Brocklehurst took just five minutes to cross the line for the first time and added three more, while Andy Isherwood picked up a hat-trick and Matthew Fogarty and Valu Bentley got two each.

Jack Bradbury`s try rounded out the scoring while Micky Diveny kicked nine goals. Gateshead finally replied in the 64th minute through a Robin Peers try, and Ryan Clarke scored their other eight points with a try and two late goals.

Good signs that some confidence is returning to the team today. All the players who have had a few weeks out of the team(Isherwood,Gilchrist,Whitmore) all had super games and pushed themselves into the fray. Whitmore tore them apart up the middle whilst Isherwood had a cracking game out wide as did Gilchrist down the middle.Bentley was vastly improved and deservedly scored two tries whilst Clarke gets better all the time. Fogarty showed a lot of potential with no only pace but power and skill. Wood had a much better game and was unlucky to have a couple of efforts chalked off for forward passes. Bradbury was excellent out wide and set up three of Brocky's tries who also had another good game as usual. Roden and Diveney looked better with a dominant pack and most of the players contributed.

Credit to Gateshead they kept their spirits up, never stopped competing and deserved to get on the score sheet. Ref was pretty good, tried to let the game flow and I felt our play was helped by that.

Workington got a bonus today at Swinton so next weeks games is shaping up to extremely tough.
