This would be great not only for Hornets but also the Stadium company bout time
the smaller clubs got in on the act and sure it would be a sell out

Be interesting to see whether this bid is given the full support of the Stadium Company owners, given recent feelings with regards to the pitch. The Stadium is in need of investment with regards to pitch protection, something that will benefit all of those who use the pitch. Such purchases will cost money, and whilst I fully understand and accept that it won't be high up on Hornets' priorities due to a high quality pitch being more important for a sport which sees the ball roll along the pitch rather than one where players mostly run on it, for me I can see problems ahead if paying for such pitch protection is left entirely to the football club to fund.

Given the protection that the club have looked into can cost up to £100,000, it would only be right that this is paid for through a rent increase of the stadium for all parties, perhaps over a period of five years. If the football cannot gain the Stadium Company support for a scheme like this, I can only see the football club veto the World Cup game.

A game that would bring extra money into the Stadium company and put Rochdale the Stadium and the club into the spotlight. If the football club do veto the game and all the good that comes to the Stadium and the town then we really do have big problems.

Don/t want to get into an argument CD (as this type of thread will very often become) but you know Hornets haven't got a pot to pee in. As you say, Hornets would see very little (if any) direct benefit from pitch covers, play only about half as many games as the Dale do at Spotland and play mostly in the summer when covers are generally not needed any way and have a six period during pitch relayins when we can't use the pitch, what would you say would be a "fair" split of the costs would be?

Would the use of covers during the winter months negate the need for an annual pitch relay so that it would only be relayed every two years? This would save money which could be passed on.

If the RFL do award Rochdale a game then I think the game will go ahead regardless of whether the Dale veto or not. As you know the RFL own 45% of Spotland and the council, who own 10%, are part of the bid team.

Have to agree with the Dawg, and BH, the benefits certainly do seem to outweigh any imagined detriments, it's a total of one extra game of rugby, which can't do much harm to the pitch, and raises the profile of the glorious rugby, the historic town, the Stadium, and the footie team too.

If Hornets are successful in being chosen to host a World Cup game it will be much, much more than a game of Rugby.

It will involve many people coming into the town fromother towns, cities and even countries. Local traders from taxi companies, restaurants, cafes and pubs would see a fantastic increase in custom, even if only for a day or two and the stadium will also benefit by selling food, drink and the like. This is the sort of event that wold really put Rochdale back on the map!

To consider even thinking of vetoing this is pure folly!

We all know that due to the much bigger crowds in football there is little chance of Spotland ever being used for that World Cup but if they did what would the Dale fans think if we tried to stop it?

No, we must all embrace this application and try to make the best of it if we are selected. I know I will.

The quote on Rochdaleonline directly from the council contradicts your posting.

Council Leader Colin Lambert said the council is exploring how it might be involved and he believes Rochdale has the facilities required: “We are working with Rochdale Hornets and will also be getting together with other stakeholders and groups to discuss their involvement in a bid.

“By working together, the club, the council and many community partners are keen to get involved in order to gain maximum exposure and economic benefit for all.”

Individual Teams are not allowed to bid for the right to Host World Cup Games !, the Bids have to come through the Councils of the Towns or Cities !

CD if the RFL award a World Cup game to Rochdale, i'll put money on the fact that the Football can do Diddly Squat to prevent it happening !

I know I'm straying from my initial point, but I think the benefits you mentioned are being massively over estimated. If we are talking about a game that will fill Spotland with paying spectators, then no one in their right mind, no matter how petty, could have any arguments at all about such a match being hosted at the ground. But there will be little interest in a game between Fiji and Ireland beyond Hornets supporters and people with a vested interest in either side (and most Irish aren't even aware there is a rugby league side from their country). It's not as if the media will whip up any excitement for a sport it normally ignores as best as it possibly can. It will take a monumental effort from the council (and we know their track record) to issue sufficient free tickets to get the attendance to anywhere close to 3000. I write this as a RL supporter and not one like many from the Dale who are quick to stick the boot into your sport. There's been other games played at Spotland, like women's football finals and lacrosse, all of which were prestigious for the sports involved, but as you and I both know, it's hard enough getting paying supporters to turn up to Spotland to watch two teams that they have a vested interest in.

I meant from the point of view of the pitch :)

---------------------------

It would be neat if The Co-operative (the one that's good with food) would get involved with this, there's good reason for them to: They sponsor the league, and were founded in Rochdale. I know their current TV ad seems to have overlooked that.

Isn't the whole point of a co-op to help each other
