Chairman Des Johnston met with Schofield today and the decision was made only four months after he appointed the former Great Britain captain as successor to Steve McCormack.
Schofield endured a turbulent spell in charge at Barrow, his four games in the Northern Rail Cup seeing the side win two and lose two as they were eliminated at the group stage for the first time since 2005.
The 16-12 defeat at Dewsbury which saw Raiders knocked out of the competition was followed by an under-par 56-26 victory over amateurs Leigh Miners Rangers in the Challenge Cup third round.
No-one from the club has yet officially commented on the situation, but unofficially, they have confirmed Schofield has gone. An official statement is due this afternoon.
Schofield himself declined to comment, but did not deny his departure when contacted by the Evening Mail. He has since told several Barrow raiders fans personally that he has been sacked.
More to follow.............

and some of the comments from the supporters...........
Well Des appointed him and has made another cock up in his choice of head coach. Who next Jimmy Cranky? A joint effort from the chuckle brothers? Look at the applicants coaching achievements and skills not whose name you recognize
most annoying - I had 1st week of june in the sweep!!
- Barry Chuckle lives in the next street to me!!!
Gary Schofield O.B.E ( Out By Easter)
King Des strikes again
What a total farce!
the club is a farce at the moment
I wouldnt be surprised to see Dave Clark back at Barrow.

As well as paying schofield up........around £80k the figure mentioned.........des is a frickin clown ! Who would want that job now.....let Des pick the team and save himself some more cash !!
wrong appointment or not he should have given a decent chance.
I get the impression that Des Johnson is treating the club as his own to satisfy his megalomaniacal fantasies.
I'd rather see a good, stable club building solid foundations for the future, albeit perhaps not in Super League, rather than a club taking the S**t or bust approach, which seems to be what is happening at the moment.
Absolutely agreed, friend of mine has emailed from Batley having a great laugh about it! It's like Henry VIII and his wives all over again, no woman in their right mind wanted to marry him after he'd got rid of the first 5 and no coach of any worth is going to want to take a job which may not last longer than a couple of months!
I' not a Des hater and completely appreciate what he's done for the club but this coach fiasco is also of his doing and it's not doing us any favours. Putting money into the club doesn't mean you own it!
Another similarity is that Henry VIII had VD which was also slightly off putting to prospective bridesOur club appears to be suffering from the same affliction at the moment but of the Verbal kind.........
and perhaps even worse than that we may also be suffering from premature ejaculation!
but who am I to judge not knowing all the facts!!.

As the Seaguls have nothing to talk about other than Barra - could I ask if Eagletarian, Griff and Eagleraider all the same person i.e. some spilt personality thing going on?? Its common knowledge that there is no such thing as three Sheffield fans so I just wondered if you are bonkers pretending to be three peopleI don't thing that is the right Nigel!!!

Largest Cities in the UK
This is a list of the largest cities in the United Kingdom. Note that the population statistic for London refers to Greater London which according to the "official definition" is not considered a city. City Population
London 7.2 Million
Birmingham 992000
Leeds 720000
Glasgow 560000
Sheffield 512000
1831 - That's a fantastic turn out from the UK's 5th Largest city in the UK! (and I'd wager most of them were from Cheshire!)
Batley pop est 49,000 Dewsbury 54,000 added together you still have a population of nearly Five times that of the heavy woolen area
and you can only pull in 300 regulars

You have gone to a lot of trouble to come up with very flawed stats, we in Sheffield have Multi Sports which make various demands on people who are sports fans.....I have watched Birstall Cricket Club, that obviously may be a drain on your sport watching citizens.....The only other sport that appears to be available in the Batley area is the Seagull Bating Society...I assume you are that organisations President, keep up the good work, I'm sure you will eventually recruit like minded Fanciers!!!!

. A concerned Batley fan - one of many
You must be so new to the "wonderful game".........or are just emerging from the crystalis you have been entombed in for the past x years ...........
Please come up with something new, original and less patronising and pathetic. This childish posting appears to be a rewrite of postings going back at least to 2003 when the forum came into existence.
I believe you must have some "removed" cousin/relative who was the 'but' of our lives and had several pseudonames, and not pseudonyms, who spent hours denegrating a club, its supporters and/or the general support of Sheffield Eagles.
In my opinion, you should be a concerned fan, concerned about your own mental stability and if you must be derogatory, please go elsewhere to find your fun and stick to upsetting Bulldog fans.
Little bit of history for you........... Raiders ( Border Raiders as they were then) were the ONLY club to support the re-emergence of Sheffield in 1999. The Eagles and Barrow fans have a great repartie with each other and don't need you being .............

Er... I joined in 2006? I have made to-date 650 posts on a number of boards
whilst between you and your other two persona have made inexcess of 11,000 posts! That is a third of all Seaguls posts on your forum..... three of you! It further demonstrates that the support of the Eagles is CC1 at best! Of course you will prove me wrong when 200of you travel 30 minutes up the M1 from the UK's 5th largest city from the RL "development" zone with all your local lads from the South pacific to give us a sound trashing...... not.

Sheffield never has been and probably never will be a rugby town and will probably always struggle to get half decent gates, although if our 2 so called soccer teams continue as they are doing you never know.
Sheffield RUFC are 79th in the list of 100 leading (English?) RU clubs (http://pitchero.com/clubs/sheffield/) with no tradition of any sort.
Sheffield Tigers RUFC are currently in National Three Midlands League!!
Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday
