Some excellent individual performances today, as well as an excellent team performance. Any one from Matty, Stack, Mossop, Frazer, Kaighan, Carter, Coward, McGoff, Bainbridge, could have picked up the man of the match award. The team have now set a benchmark for the season at home and the only downside is that only 473 were there to watch them. We need to get the message out to all the ex-fans that this team could have success this year, especially with a strong support behind them.
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

We all knew how good matty is going forward at the play the ball, but his defence is awesome, at one point I counted ten tackles on the belt end, the guy is so fit. Gus got the MOM award but you could have given it to just about anyone in a Town shirt today.
We have another tough one next week at Donny, if we can produce anything like todays performance we could be in with a shout, we then have 2 winnable games against S Wales and Gateshead before we meet our much loved neighbours on Good Friday.
Another poor crowd today,
UP THE TOWN

In attack we took almost every half chance and could have had a couple more through Stack,Mossop and Fraser. Kaighan was good last year but this year he's gone up a level , we definitely lose direction especially in defence when Matty goes off as for MOM ??? take your pick.
Four points against two of the top teams and to deprive them of a point is a great effort...love it!!

well done all! super scotty kaigans try was worth the entrance money alone. the only sad things about today are the crowd and 5 messages on this thread about a brilliant win from a much improved team and club. you sometimes wonder what has to be done to boost attendances and so boost the club. this vicious circle of poor crowds holding the club back is frustrating. i'll do my bit trying to persuade ex fans i know to come back because this team deserves more support on that show!!
I agree griffin4, it is a problem how we get fans back to DP. I keep mentioning the fact on Town's Facebook page in the hope that some of the 1800 or so friends of Town take the hint and turn up. I know many of them that post on the Facebook page live away but there must be a good percentage living locally that just don't bother to go to matches. We will have to keep up the drip, drip, drip method and hoepfully it gets through.

Sorry friend, I didn't mean to offend you just too lazy to check the total when I posted the message and I do know how hard you try to get some support.
No doubt if we get a few more good wins under our belt some will come back to us.

excellent Idea 'Wonky' in a time of recession £12 and £8 concessionsWould it not be an idea against south Wales to possibly do admission half price, people will only believe the improvements if they see for themselves, so with a bit of advertisement and word of mouth from the die hards we could bump the numbers. And let's be honest we should be able to do a number on the scorpions.
In the late 80s we were bottom of the RL and were playing in front of 500,I never thought I would see a decent crowd again. A couple of years later Ray Ashton comes along and builds a cracking team of mainly locals with a couple of class overseas players (Paddy and King Kenny
Unfortunately times have changed and it isn't as easy to get them back, there is just too much competition with sport on the box. Add this to the fact that the dream of reaching the pinnacle of the game has been taken away for ever by the ostriches at Red Hall, and it becomes clear why every single team is struggling to pull the fans in.
Look on the Oldham forum and they have a thread devoted to where their missing fans are, it makes interesting reading.

The worst I can remember it was that stupid season when the RFL in their infinite wisdom had that ridiculous set up of a league with 6 temas ( I think it was 6) and we ended up playing Carlisle 6 times in a season, including cups. I can remember an attendance of around 250 for one of the Carlisle games.
That was in 91 - 92 , dkw, when we finished bottom of an 8 team Second Division. Carlisle beat us 4 times in the league and once in the Lancashire Cup but we got our own back when we beat them in the Preliminary Round of the Challenge Cup.
Our top try scorers that season with 6 each were Buck Armstrong, Paul Penrice and Neil Rooney and our star signing of that season was the one and only Ben Lia, who managed to play 5 games (one as substitute). The year after was the start of our successful period when we finished runners-up to Keighley in the Third Division and went to our first Old Trafford Divisional Final against Fev from Division 2.

Your right, it was 8 teams not 6. What an horrendous season that was to watch, Was it Ray Ashton that was coach, or had he been replaced by Dean Williams by then? Ah, Ben Lia, that brings back memories....all of them bad. Did we sign him from Widnes? That was in 91 - 92 , dkw, when we finished bottom of an 8 team Second Division. Ray Ashton was coach until December when Dean Williams took over. Lia had been at Widnes the previous season and hadn't done much for them either. "Cocky" did streak against Carlisle but I can't remember which game it was!!!
