Well, after last weeks performance we should definitely be looking to come away from Whitebank with another 3 points in the bag. Oldham have got a few injury problems and were 4 scores away from a win at Workington last week. I'm going to be bold and go for a Lions victory by 20 points.

1. Mort
2. Foxen
3. Dodd
4. Reay
5. Hurst
6. Ainscough
7. Watson
8. Wingfield
9. Smith
10. Wilson
11. Cuniffe
12. Gallagher
13. Joseph

14. Ashall
15. D. Hawkyard
16. R. Hawkyard
17. Morrison

Not going to get carried away, I think whoever wins will be within the 12 point BP margin. Wouldn't complain at a bonus point away from home, a win would be fantastic, but its only a matter of time before we come unstuck. Ever the optimist

1. Mort
2. Foxen
3. Dodd
4. Reay (Thompson if fit)
5. Hurst
6. Ainscough
7. Watson
8. Morrison
9. Smith
10. Wilson
11. Cuniffe
12. Wingfield (dont think hes got the bulk to play at prop, more effective in 2nd row)
13. Joseph

14. Ashall
15. D. Hawkyard
16. Fitzpatrick (scored 2 tries when he last played, great impact sub)
17. Gallagher (could be spelled in any forward position)
Im only smiling because `no-one`'s found the bodies yet.

It seems likely Hurst, Rigby, Thompson, R Hawkyard and Holland will all be out injured. Mark Smith reportedly had a "slight" back problem that kept him out against Rochdale. Flooks was reported to have picked up a knock a few weeks ago and there has been no update on him for a little while. Johnson has been said to also have some sort of fitness issue. It seems to be evident that Adam Ryder won't be joining the Lions this season.

Even if all 9 of the above aren't available I would still anticipate a win at the weekend, although the loss of these players and the unsettling effect of enforced changes will bring the two sides closer together. Oldham appear to have gone backwards since the Late Trains Cup match at the Willows. Take this game and two very much easier fixtures follow, which will give a nice window of time to get a few of the injured players back.

Something like - Mort; Foxen, Dodd, D Hawkyard, Reay; Ainscough, Watson; Wilson, Ashall, Morrison, Wingfield, Gallagher, Joseph. Subs Forber, Cuniffe, Tyrer, Merville.

Steve McCormack still has a couple of other options to consider for the backs with Tony Stewart and Barry Hamilton. Personally I would leave them out on the grounds of needing firmer defence on the fringes. He could bring Forber in at 6 and move Ainscough to centre, as he did at Leigh.

Rugby League - great game, shame about the administration.

Don't think you guys have much to worry about on Sunday.
As above really, we have gone backwards after a 50-0 friendly win over Haven and a well deserved win over a Hunslet side, who just thought they had to turn up to win.

Our squad is short on numbers at best, and with at least 10 players carrying injuries, I would be surprised if we stay withing 30 of your lot.
Just bring plenty of money for our bar...!

In the case of Bruce Johnson - you! You posted on the forum last week that the reason Johnson has not been in the side recently is fitness related. Although there has been no further details recently, it was well reported last season that he was playing despite carrying a torn bicep. So its logical to conclude that might still be the problem, but don't know for sure. A shame he's not been in action much this year, having previously been a mainstay of the side and he has the talent to be a major asset still - I'm sure opposition coaches are only too pleased he isn't featuring.

Although there has been no official word that Adam Ryder won't be fulfilling the 1 year contract he was reported as having signed for this season, he has been removed from the squad list on the Swinton Lions website and is still playing union for Huddersfield YMCA. Seems pretty clear he has exited stage left.

All the other news on the injury front has been covered in the press / club website / www.cbsport.org over the last week.

It seems likely both sides will be depleted on Sunday.

Oldham Roughyeds v Swinton Lions (3:00pm)
Oldham’s injury crisis gets worse as coach Tony Benson struggles to deal with at least eight absentees for Sunday’s Co-operative Championship One fixture with Swinton Lions.
Unlucky Roughyeds are missing Marcus St Hilaire (hamstring), Ben Heaton (tonsillitis), John Gillam (face), Martin Roden (hamstring), Matt Fogerty, Luke Sutton (dead leg), Dave Ellison (ankle) and Neil Roden (groin).
Tom Wood-Hulme faces a late fitness test after being involved in a car crash on Wednesday.
But Benson is refusing to lose focus on the task in hand. He said: “Swinton are the form team. They’ll be very difficult opponents, but we’ll put a team together and have a good go at them.”
The good news for Benson is that winger Lucas Onyango came through last week’s game against Workington without suffering any ill effects after his recent injury.
However, the Oldham coach has urged his side to be more clinical with their performances. Benson said: “Last week there was a lot of rugby naiveté on our behalf.
“We had a young team out there and we just gave up too much ball through penalties and forced penalties. You can’t win games like that.”
Swinton are set to be without prop Neil Holland due to a knee injury suffered against Workington two weeks ago.
But Lions coach Steve McCormack will be in confident mood as he looks to extend his side’s 100 per cent start to this season’s Co-operative Championship One competition.

The following article from the Oldham Chronicle gives some more details. Ben Wood might miss the match - his absence would seriously blunt the Roughyeds attack.

Injury nightmare for Oldham
Date published: 24 March 2011

OLDHAM RL Club are dealing with a major injury crisis ahead of Sunday’s tough challenge against a strong Swinton Lions side at the Whitebank Stadium (3pm kick-off).

Out of a squad of 23 no fewer than 10 players are on the casualty list, three of whom are already out of this weekend’s game.

Teenage back Matthew Fogarty, who damaged a knee at Workington last Sunday in a collision with team-mate Mark Brocklehurst, has no chance of being fit in time.

First-choice left-wing John Gillam is out for a few weeks after an operation to repair a fractured cheek bone — and centre Marcus St Hilaire is still struggling with a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the last two games.

“I can tell you now that those three won’t play,” said harassed coach Tony Benson.

“It’s touch-and-go for a lot of the other guys, who will be queuing up for treatment at training tonight.

“We were lucky in 2010 in that we went the whole of the campaign without ever having to face a situation like this, which has hit us only two games into the new league season.

“We are behind the eight ball — and that’s putting it mildly.

“And just to show that it never rains but it pours, I had a text from Tom Wood-Hulme informing me that he had been involved in a car accident and was on his way to hospital with a sore back and neck.”

There are concerns about six more — Ben Heaton (tonsillitis), Martin Roden (hamstring), Luke Sutton (dead leg), Dave Ellison (ankle), Neil Roden (groin) and Ben Wood (ankle).

Heaton and Martin Roden didn’t play at Workington where Sutton, Ellison, Neil Roden and Wood picked up the injuries which threaten to keep them sidelined on Sunday.

Benson: “We’ll be monitoring them closely over the next few days, and hoping for the best.

“It’s just our luck that experienced men like Neil Roden, Martin Roden and Marcus St Hilaire are all hurt at the same time.

“Between them they fill the roles of captain, ex-captain, joint vice-captains, assistant coach and fitness conditioner.”
