The Roughyeds got off to a cracking start with a good try by Ben Wood down the left flank, followed up by a chip forward by Mike Diveney, who then dribbled and the most deft of touches as he applied pressure for the second try. 12 - 0 up and looking far better than the week before at Workington.

Swinton were taking their time in settling as errors by Ainscough, Smith and Dodd gave Oldham more possession on the back of some sound tackling. Oldham had more pressure on the Swinton line, but the Lions survived and started to get more possession. The Lions pride had taken a big dent in the first quarter, but all that was about to change. Ten metres out on the fifth tackle, Tommy Gallagher was put into a gap and scored a very good try. 12 - 6.

Swinton back on the attack following a penalty by Elli, holding and Ainscough puts Wilson in the clear. 12 - 12. Growing in confidence with ball in hand, Dodd sprints up the right wing and extends score to 12 - 16.

Young Sean Robinson was put under lots of pressure on his debut, and came through with flying colours. He clears his line well, Lucas adds more yards and then Elli takes up the ball deep into Swinton territory. Following a chip through Oldham concede another penalty and gave Swinton more cheap yards. Oldham defend well near their line then go to sleep as Ashall ghosts over from 15 yds out at acting half back and scores under the posts. 12 - 22.

Oldham start the half with a penalty on the first tackle. Swinton are soon on the board again with a great attacking play down the left channel, terrific dummy and scores wide out. Good conversion. 28 - 12. Swinton are now rampant, off loading in the tackle and Dodd scores to take the score to 32, easy kick 34 - 12. Joseph causing mayhem in the middle, running great lines, ball dribbled through and the impressive Wingfield scores 12 - 40. Flood gates have now opened and a great set of six down the left flank and Flooks spins out of tackle and scores 44 -12. Four more tries were to follow by Ashall, a blinder down the middle by Ainscough, Cunliffe and Mort. Boultsy got onto the scoreboard twice and on each occasion running from deep was put into a gap 10yds out from the line and powered over. Final score 24 - 68.

I totally agree with Marshy on a different post, Oldham have beaten Swinton on numerous occasions in the past and no-one would now disagree with Swinton's turn to celebrate a fine victory over an Oldham side who can score tries, but whose defensive lines leave a great deal to be desired. Swinton have "promotion" written all over them. For the Roughyeds there are more tough times ahead with limited resources.

However true fans will get behind the club as it strives to lay good foundations through the development of our facilities ( I know things are moving slowly ) and with limited cash, develop a good reserve grade team that is seen as a main feeder of the first team squad. On his debut Sean Robinson was a credit to Houghy and the club as he stepped up to the first team and won the man of the match award.

Hi TBozz

Once again a very true reflection of the game and I also agree with your last paragraph. It is important that the foundations are laid and we don't try and get ahead of ourselves. We had some young guns out there who, for around 15 - 20 minutes gave as good as they got, if not more. Once Swinton found their form they blitzed us, simple as that, and our guys stopped competing once Swinton hit the 30's. Having said that, Robinson can hold his head up after a great senior debut and who should keep his place in the squad on that showing.

Just as a reality check I think we should remember who was missing such as Rats, Junior, Heaton, Gilly, Sutton, Wood-Hulme to name a few. Take these out of any team and it will seriously damage it.

Thanks again for true reflection TBozz.

Hiya Tony Mac - yes we were down to " the bare bones " again as we have often been in the past. Swinton have a big talented squad and will thrive in the league. Can we hope to see some of the above back in the team in the very near future? Will Ashy and Walker be replaced? Can we afford to spend more money or do we look to our youngsters to step up? Based on Robbo's performance, I know the option that I favour at the moment. One issue that disturbs me is that we still appear to be giving away many needless penalties throughout the game and giving the opposition cheap yards and repeat sets.

Hi again TBozz

I think we need to have some of the injured back soon and try to get a settled squad asap. I think also that we need to do a little recruiting in the very near future with regards to a proven and talented Halfback and another big mobile Prop. It was good to see young Robinson on Sunday who showed some steel and grit and even though he appeared to be singled out a couple of times for some roughing up and cheap shots he never shirked. The ideal would be to have a decent sized squad and be able to draft in the youngsters with some experienced older guys around them who can talk them through the game and look after them. Yesterday we had a very inexperienced 3/4 line and we paid the price but I'm not knocking the lads because we threw them in rather than planned it because we had to. On the penalties front I have to agree, although some of the penalties yesterday could have gone either way but went against us - and that's what happens when your down.

On a positive note, its amazing to think that we are talking about missing experienced players and in that equation is Ben Heaton. It doesn't seem two minutes since he was a rookie coming into the squad from the reserves. So it shows that bringing on youngsters can be good as long as you can do it in a planned and structured way.

Keep up the good work on the reports TBozz.

Hi

went to the game yesterday and was very impressed for the first twenty, but our heads went down as soon as they scored after Williams got pushed out to touch from the scrum.

I'm sure we where well favoured in the first half regarding penalties, but things got evened out throughout the match.

I was though very surprised at Isherwood he looked totally out of shape and was targetted by the Lions (even heard Smith shout it out to his boys).

It seems like this is going to be a compromise season which i can accept as long there are credible sins of development. Will obviously get better when the injured get back.

Not being totally negative just practical.

P.S Foxen ripped us apart AGAIN, sure he'll do this all season to all teams

He really is a great player for us, however his positioning is very dubious as is his catching, as u witnessed when he knocked on a kick in our 20, which he did twice I think last week at rochdale. Just hope he improves that aspect of his game otherwise he will be targeted!
Im only smiling because `no-one`'s found the bodies yet.

I've waited over 24 hours before commenting, but I'm still disgusted by what can only be called a gutless, shambolic performance by Hamilton' amateurs. The history of the club tells you that made in Oldham will only work if the local players have talent, but, of course, made in Oldham for Hamilton means cheap. We were beaten yesterday by a team playing in our division, who racked up the highest number of points we've conceded in a home game in the entire history of the club. It was probably the highest score Swinton have ever posted against us. They were taking the mickey out of us in the second half. Shaun Robinson, on debut, aside, the rest were a shambles, showing no pride at all in the jersey.

And then I come on here to find people saying that, as above, this may be a compromise season, and we may have to endure this rubbish for the rest of the season. Well I've news for these people - I'll put with it and I'll be there all season, but keep an eye on the gates, as they plummet still further. Fans wouldn't turn up to watch us at the top of the league, they sure as hell won't to watch us "competing" in mid table or near the bottom, as looks likely. But hey, we'll carry on cos we like being poor, and the most important thing is that Hamilton's still in charge and Benson will stay cos he comes cheap, and he stood by us 2 years ago. The fact that he's another one in a long line of useless coaches we've had(with Mike Ford the obvious exception) seems to mean nothing to the present administration.

The obvious answer is more investment in the club, but let's have it right, Sheikh Mansoor wouldn't be allowed to invest in Oldham rugby, not as long as Hamilton's in charge, and there lies the total root of the problem. He saved the club all those years ago, but does that give him the right to kill it now, as a continuation of current policies surely will.

I wonder if Hamilton will be able to keep up the repayments to BQ on these falling gates?
because if he cant he may have to give it up ( A lot will be hoping that happens) and someone
or some consortium could take over and take the club forward.

Never ever been one of Mr H's fans but I do actually have some sympathy for him currently in view of the apparent lack of progress over the ground situation. He cant really 'invest' in the current ground in the way it is screaming out for. Rob,I always thought yOu had a bit more about you than that last response tbh.People are entitled to their view and you can't be meaning that you want to see Mr H continue effectively alone given his track record over the last 8/9/10 years. We have gone backwards in a number of incredibley important ways and the advent of Whitebank Rd is ,v sadly, looking like a false dawn (altho' not necessarily his fault this time round).
The club shouldn't be in this situation and alot of it is totally avoidable but we are in the position and we must deal with it,the core of the hardcore fans are still going but the fare being served up is hardly a great advert either for the club or the league as a competition. We were desperately poor yesterday again and the team, the facilities and the fans need investment quickly or it will die. WE ARE GETTING CLOSE TO THE POINT WHERE THE AMATEUR TEAMS IN THE TOWN ARE GETTING ALMOST AS MANY SPECCIES AS THE PRO TOWN TEAM.The econonmics therefore cannot be right and something has to change.Yes, we've had Bill Quinn and his £ but it didn't work (keep speculating....)but its the worst kept secret in the world that people have difficulties in 'investing' in the club to the level so clearly req'd. If people are to invest they need to have clear unfetted access to the books. Ask the club haven't attracted the other directors/investors req'd and you'll get a loud silence (esp now that Rachael has gone-why exactly was that please? has she gone travelling or home or got a better job-lets be told please). The necessary PR machine appears to have not just stalled but to have rusted up. Come on Chris, it's impossible to do it alone with a dwindling band of acolytes.Huge change of direction reqd & you know it in your heart of hearts. If you want the club to thrive, go public with a call for assistance to real investors given some power at the club to affect the change required. Roughedz may not be saying what you like but he makes a fair general point that needs adressing by Mr Hamilton in public. It's our club, part of the fabric of the town,it shouldn't be allowed to die a miserably slow death.
And before you say anything, I was there yesterday and will be at Lawkholme Lane on Sunday shouting the lads on.

What an insightful reply! You should be asking why people like myself who have been supporting the club home and away for 40+ years are now losing interest!
If things don't change and quickly, there will be no need for anyone to be complaining about not being able to see the pitch because there will be plenty of room!

Could easily have been my reply too.

It has to be asked why I feel more despondent than in the no win season which saw us relegated to this division. Could it be that after four grand final defeats, the realisation that even the play offs may be beyond us this year? Could it be that nothing happened at Whitebank over the close season to improve the facilities at a very basic ground (stadium?)? I couldn't even go to my normal spot where my 4 year old lad can easily see the pitch because it was blocked off. It all appears extremely unprofessional at the moment.

Please do not question my loyalty. Last time I went to Keighley I cycled there and back. Next Sunday I will not be there because I can't summon up the enthusiasm.
