To the surprise of no one, widnes were granted a super league place next season, Halifax are still in the running should the rfl decided to put 2 teams up. Barrow were completely rejected.

Widnes are having a poor season in the Championship but now that they have been given a SL place for next season, I wonder what happen if they finished in the relegation position in the Championship!!!! I bet the RFL never gave that a thought!!!
I remember when .............................
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

I don't think it would matter if they finished 3rd bottom the whole application process is flawed anyway and is only designed to ensure they can justify kicking one of the M62 clubs out to accommodate a development team. If we got our act together in West Cumbria and somehow managed to finance a serious bid which included a modern ground then we would get a franchise at the expense of one of the M62 clubs, and I also think we would probably be exempt from having to reapply for at least 6 years to guarantee a Super League presence in this part of the UK.
Huddersfield, Gateshead, Crusaders, London Broncos, Paris St. Germain, Catalans were all admitted to Super League without earning the right, so there is no reason to think they would treat us any differently in Cumbria if the bid was strong enough.
Unfortunately because of a short sighted councils and local people who don't attend matches at either club the opportunity has probably passed us by now
