Town v Scorpions

Second half with the wind behind them Town started to play as we all know they can and tightened up their defence to the extent that Scorpions were kept scoreless for the full 40 minutes. In the end Town were comfortable winners and it could have been even more comfortable with 3 tries disallowed, two of them by the touch judge after the ref was about to give the try.
We look a better team when we speed up the play and move the ball around but too often we play one man rugby and get drawn in to playing down the middle. Just once in the second half did we attempt a 40 / 20 kick with wind behind us and too many times took the wrong option. I still think we lack a leader on the park, someone to move us around and organise dummy runners , etc.
Still, a win is a win but hopefully the players will look at their own performances and think how good they can be if and when they get it right for 80 minutes.
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

Surely we've got the best pack and hooker in the league and we're picking up bonus points and wins when we're playing badly so if we put it together it wouldn't take much to be top dogs in this league.
It was a good job Matty was out there today mind.

473 v Oldham 376 v Scorpions thats only a difference of 97, now to say monthers day and carlisle on tv put of a massive 97 well it dont look well for the rest of the season.
It must be so good as a fan of such a well supported side as the Reds, to
have concerns for Town, what have your last four crowds been Rockerlad?
Oh well, I can tell you 348, 379, 389 & last game 314 v Corby. Maybe your
concerns would be better directed in that way.
Still maybe if the reds luddites had looked to the future and backed a plan to
get good facilities for both sides, then fans may have had a more positive outlook.

Careful, you're starting to sound like a Whitehaven Fan.That won't last long if the "racing" is like that every week at £17.50!

Without knocking anyone at the club we need to be hearing more good news and what we intend to do to raise the image of the club. What are we doing to promote the game in and around Workington? Have we any special offers for games coming up? I know we had reduced beer prices last year or the year before but that doesn't bring in the families just more drinkers.
We get the speedway rent which many say keeps us going but it has also been one of the reasons for our drop in crowds because more people attend that than our games. People with kids can't afford to go to both and bikes roaring round a track wins with the kids every time to a game of rugby. Speedway is also every week where we can go several weeks without a home game and so people get used to going to the speedway.
There is no sugar daddies (or mammies) or large industries offering sweeteners to the communtiy waiting in the wings for Town so we have to earn every penny we can from our own efforts. I don't know what our new Commercial Manager has planned but how about starting with the Good Friday game with half price admissions and kids under 16 free if accompanied by an adult. By all means go the whole hog and reduce beer prices as well and put entertainment on in the Derwent Lounge if it will attract more people but let's do something.
In 1997 when it looked likely that we were going out of business we got 11,000 names on a petition to the RFL (yes, I know many people signed more than once) but could we do that now? I have serious doubts that we could get just half of that total now
The players have a part to play in this as well for how many times in the past have we got a bit of interest in the club going and attract a few more down to the ground only for the players to put in their worst performance.
Same with the press who could be a bit more positive about the club. Today's headline in the N & S about Town is that we got out of jail which is probably correct BUT I dare to suggest that if that had been a Haven game the headline would have read something like "Brilliant fight back by Haven secures win". It is people who don't attend the games that we want to sell the club and the game to not those who were there and witnessed it for themselves.
Maybe it's time for a full re-appraisal of what we want to achieve at Town but standing there yesterday in a crowd of 357 (not 376 as previously stated) was depressing. Or maybe I'm just getting too long in the tooth!!!

I know what you mean though, I think it was down to the quality of the opposition rather than the Comets. But crowds like that will certainly have an effect on both the RL clubs I would think, especially at those prices. That won't last long if the "racing" is like that every week at £17.50!

At the start of the year Keith they will have worked the haven match as the match they defo make money on so to offer it at half price would be financial suicide far better me thinks is when the poster is uploaded on here all of us print a load of and pin them everywhere we can as soon as possable so it gets in peoples heads there is a match on..All joking aside lads but this is a problem now for Town and we need to be seen to be seriously addressing it. Okay it was Mothering Sunday and kicking off at 1pm wouldn't help or having Carlisle Utd on TV from Wembley may also have had an effect on the crowd but rockerlad is correct as we only got 473 last home match. So, what's the answer?

I appreciate your point anok4u but it's also no good offering cut price for lesser games. If you take our crowd against Oldham, 473, our best crowd, and add on say 150 from Haven you are looking at 650 - 700 maximum. With offers and cut prices on a Bank Holiday we could maybe almost double that which would bring in the same amount, through the gates, but the spin off is in bar takings and if people have enjoyed the game they could come next game. I have heard some people saying that £11 or £12, whichever it is, is too much for them to afford especially young family folk and we have to realise that we are in a competition with many other pastimes for peoples money, especially in the summer months. We are all diehards and will be there no matter but we have to also appreciate how others not so committed feel and think.
