Bomb Jack recently posted an episode of Rugby League Raw on youtube and it reminded me what a great program it was. I've got some really fond memories of it from Widnes getting promoted to Super League to David Hulme's renowned efforts with the eff word.
I recently found the one when Cas went to Super League, I didn't know it existed, probably because I had no desire to watch Widnes lose again.
It's such a shame one can't be brought back. There's never been a program like it for showing what really goes on behind the scenes in Rugby League. No punches are pulled and see what the coaches really say.

I think that was the problem. It hardly showed off the sport in a positive light.

Sorry to be petty MD but the continual Americanisation of the English language drives me up the wall. It's a programme NOT a program. I loved RLR. Never was a TV programme more aptly named.

That's the one I'd love to see with Hulme and his colourful language.

Ok, I apologize. I just really hope they renew it for another season in the fall.

I think that was my brothers first Rovers match.
Wasn't a fan of the format, didn't show the game in the way the RFL wanted it to be shown.

When I heard this programme was being cancelled I wrote to the (independent) production team and IIRC got a very nice, if somewhat strange reply. They said although he show had won several top awards, been nominated for several others, was getting bigger viewing figures every time it was shown and there was even a campaign for it to be shown nationally, the BBC suddenly cancelled it, and didn't give them a reason.
Conspiracy theory anyone???

I thought it was because SKY bought the rights.
Let's face it, which would you like? Thursday night live match full works or a late night fly-on-the-wall swearathon with a bit of RL in the background?
RL Raw was a laugh and I liked it, but the image presented wasn't the best, and a number of people felt a bit 'used' by the show once they saw the narrative thread and how it was edited.
Hulme came across as a potty-mouthed lad completely out of his depth. Peter Roe was much more savvy.

David Hulme's description of Jamie Rooney was sampled by the legendary "Phlat Cappers" on a remix they released. Great stuff then, but hopefully now lost in the mists of time.

The point I was trying to make was that the people who made the programme were independent, they paid whoever held the broadcasting rights a fee to make the programme. According to them, they got a call from the BBC one day and the programme was cancelled, that was that.I thought it was because SKY bought the rights.

Like you, I thought the image presented about lower league rugby wasn't the best, but I did enjoy it. RLRaw did serve a purpose. I noticed that there were people (darn sarf) that spoke to me about Rugby League purely because they watched RLRaw, due to the word of mouth about this programme, and the general opinion was what a bloody tough game that is.

Maybe my memory's going but I remember this on ITV, not BBC. Im sure Ford put some advertising money into it.
Any road up, if SKY, the rights oweners, decide to make their own show & broadcast it there's not a lot the BBC or ITV can do about it, is there?

It was originally an ITV series. By the end it was on BBC and I think it was something of a one-off.
