The 3vSport Midlands Rugby League 9s tournament was won by Chester Gladiators.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, took place on Monday 2nd May and was excellently hosted by Telford Raiders, which saw eight teams enter for an action packed afternoon of fast flowing Rugby League.

The Gladiators, who have entered the tournament most years since it began, took the title after toppling last year’s beaten finalists Leicester Storm with a clinical 34-12 performance.

The event featured two pools which provided a round-robin series, followed by semi-finals for the top two teams in each group, culminating in the final to round off the day.

“The 3vSport Midlands 9s served up a fantastic start to the season for many of the clubs involved” said Tom Tsang, Midlands Regional Development Officer. “The event has cemented itself in the Rugby League calendar in the region and continues to be well supported by the clubs and taken seriously as the first piece of silverware on offer in the region. We’re already looking forward to staging the 2012 event!”

Other notable performances on the day came from Nottingham Outlaws, who topped Group One before being toppled by Leicester in the semi-final and St Ives Roosters who achieved second place in Group Two.

Both Telford Raiders teams secured third place in each of the groups, whilst Wolverhampton and North Derbyshire Chargers brought up the rear in Groups One and Two respectively.
