At about 8.10pm tonight I looked at Haven's forum and saw that someone had posted a message saying that there was a rugby league talk show on Radio Cumbria tonight. I switched on to Radio Cumbria and sure enough there was Dave Bowden, Charlo, Dick Raaz and Barry Richardson with John Cox chatting away.
I was just wondering how many Town fans knew anything about this and why someone from either Radio Cumbria or the club didn't think to advertise this on here. To be honest it is getting to the point if Town fans want to know anything we have to go on the Haven forum to find out, like last week where they knew Matty and Jacko were not playing at Skolars on about Wednesday but we didn't find out (officially) until Saturday evenings paper!!!!!

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

No-ones saying anything about a conspiracy but when the Chairman and Coach of our club are on a talk-in programme wouldn't it have been more beneficial for Town fans to know what they were discussing. I did say that Radio Cumbria could have posted on the forum as they have in the past. What was the point of the programme if not many people were aware of it!!!! Plus I listened to the match commentaries on Sund ay (both matches) and don't recall any mention on there.

No podcast either. Shows it as a "Listen Again" but then says it isn't available. Frustrating.

Have been in touch with radio Cumbria who replied:
"Thanks for the email and for pointing out an iplayer problem
Programmes are auto-grabbed and occasionally we do have problems. I have passed your email to our tech people to investigate.
Depending on the problem, we would hope that the audio can be available from later today."
I wonder if they could edit out Cox

Oh what a better world that would be

John Cox makes no secret he is a Haven fan and pushes their cause whenever he can. The mere fact that he gets so many mentions on here says he is doing a good job. Maybe you should try and get your man to do more to help the town cause instead of complaining about Mr Cox.

You should ask neutral fans who have to listen to him on the radio if they think he is pushing their cause....John Cox makes no secret he is a Haven fan and pushes their cause whenever he can. Supercilious twaddle from a pompous moniker (If I only cared) . Dishonesty and pathetic bias is what I would expect from the most blinkered of supporters or a petulant child not a BBC commentator and unlike you is not something I could condone.

As much as I disappprove of his commentry style he must be doing his job or surely he'd be replaced (I now don't listen to the radio as I really find it frustrating to listen to so I can empathize with Town fans having to listen to it). The media have time/space to fill and to be honest any sort of story is used to fill these slots. A lot of people on here complain about the paper, surey it would be better to take a look at what is being released by the club. I always though that the News and Star was more or less a Workingtom nights paper but there is definitely more news on Haven in there and you've got ask yourse4lf why. Any news from the club would more than likely be published as they've space to fill, but on the other hand if they're not getting information on a regular basis or find it difficult to get stories from them then obviously they'll go to somebody more accommodating. You as fans often complain that you've to go onto the Haven forum to find out information about Town, its wrong that you think that but thats the way it is and probably needs to change from within the club. Has something happened in the past that maybe the club don't trust telling the media????
Nero saying it like it is.Is it any wonder few players will come to Town. We must be the worst fans in the league.

I agree with some of what you are saying recre because I too think that for a long time our club has failed to sell itself to the public and just expect that people will turn up on matchdays as it used to be. Those days have long gone and clubs have to be more pro-active and project a good positive image if they want to get back some of the lost fans.
Having said that, there is a Haven bias as far as rugby league goes with our local media. The number one rugby league reporter for our local rag is Martin Morgan, a well known Haven fan first and foremost. The young lady who does most of our articles, if you look at all the jobs titles on the N & S website, is the Sports Editor for the Whitehaven News!!! Also the Whitehaven News has a dedicated column every week written by Alan Irving (Eye on the Ball). I wrote to the Managing Director of the CN Group about this and he passed my letter back to the editor of the Times and Star, who didn't think there was anything wrong with the coverage but pointed out that whereas Haven are the only "major" sporting club in Whitehaven, Workington also has to cater for the Reds and Comets as well as Town.
Radio Cumbria have many complaints from fans, not just Town fans, about Mr Cox and his bias towards Haven, which is understandable as he was at one time their Chief Executive Officer and is still within their "inner circle". Our commentator, John Walsh, is freelance and therefore doesn't have the same connection with the station as Cox who is "our rugby league correspondent" with Radio Cumbria.
So, yes, the club could do more but we are always on an uneven playing field.

Lets assume he was a Townie reporting on Town games, would you still be bleating about his so called bias. As for the 'if only i cared' comment you obviously do care enough to have a pop. Move on and try and encourage Mr Walsh to be more bias toward Town lets face it you could do with some positive comments to try and increase your feeble crowds.
