I'll nail my colours to the mast straight away.
I believe that the big rep matches should have their own weekends devoted to them.
They would get rid of the byes weekend where clubs get two points for sitting it out.
The season need only start one week earlier, or end one week later. That's hardly anything to worry about.
Games preceding rep games are stripped of a lot of their better players and so the paying public are short changed.
How much better it would be if all clubs had their byes on the rep weekends.

Surely it's just common sense and good business?

I see where your coming from, and agree 95%. However i do quite enjoy seeing a few of the Toyota Cup players getting games, see what they can do! And would it only be one extra week? There's 3 origin games isnt there? Or am i mis-understanding?

Maybe he was talking about International rep. matches, i.e. the ANZAC Test. It would also make a gap in the calendar where international matches could be scheduled for Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, PNG whose players compete in the NRL.

Play the ANZAC test on Anzac day, city country on a sunday afternoon and origin on a saturday night

Cut the season itself by 2-4 rounds or maybe play the 4 nations every 2 years

Just my ideas

The games this weekend (R11) were the worse for both the byes and rested players being absent.
The standard of the play was affected for the worse.
The sooner stand alone reps week's come the better!

The crowds in Sydney in particular were down this pre-rep weekend prompting media attention.

Where are you Sydney fans? Article

I've just picked out this section which relates to the topic.

... the Roosters-Knights game was, at least on paper, a bit of a stinker. Two midtable teams without their State of Origin stars would always struggle to excite the neutrals. And in Origin week, the buzz around the NRL premiership is always a little muted.

Well not a lot of comment on here, but there's been plenty of pressure applied in Aus over this issue of standalone rep weekends.
A response has crystalised:
