The fixtures for this new competition were announced today with the first matches only two weeks away (Tuesday, 7th June) and the first venue in the western section is Derwent Park. Having had a look around the rugby league forums I have to say how under-whelmed fans seem to be with this new venture, with hardly a mention anywhere.

The first teams competing at DP are Warrington, St Helens, British Police and Cumbria. The competition runs for 4 Tuesdays and one of the last venues is at the Rec on Tuesday, 28th June when the teams will be Wigan, Warrington, Salford and Cumbria.

I know when it was first mentioned that people were enthusing about top players coming up here to play in this competition but after the very big scores inflicted by SL teams over the leaders of the Championship and Championship 1 teams, does anyone genuinely believe that the SL clubs will send any of their top stars. Another point that worries me is that Cumbria (Town/Haven) are the only Championship 1 clubs to have entered this competition (I believe) and do we want to risk injuries at this stage of the season to some of our players?
I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

If and that's a big if, the super league sides send some of there big players then if it's promoted right it could bring a good revenue for town. But as you say I certainly wouldn't risk the likes of stack and Matty in it. And if you don't include the very best players both us and haven have then it will be cricket scores against us. I think it's a better concept this year so each club gets a bit of money out of it but I certainly won't be risking our league position for that competition.

I think it looks a very good concept and even if the SL sides dont sent first teamers they are still going to be very good players and stars of the future as proved when we have played Warrington & St Helens in friendlies, lets hope both Town & Haven fans attend both legs at Derwent Park on the 7th & The Recre on the 28th

Ive been advocating something like this for a few years, a short sided comp could be very accessible to new fans in a similar way to 20-20 in cricket. I will definitely be going and hope the RFL actually stick to it and give it a few years to see if it will work, rather than one year then binning it. I would prefer this kind of tournament to that shambles choo choo trophy.

Fiver is decent. Hewer reffing the cumbria game will be fun, he will confused because on one hand he will wanna look after his haven buddies, but he wont be able to bring himself to give the town players anything. Poor laal fella wont know whether hes coming or going.

Same goes for kaighan, big risk letting both play. If kaighan gets a knock then we have bamber or finch, if stack gets injured we are pretty short with shacks out already. Although I think we might rest a couple for Gateshead anyhow

Just got back from the 9's and I have to say that overall it wasn't bad. I like many others came away thinking Cumbria won the first game 16 - 14 agaisnt Saints but on the radio they had Saints winners 18 - 14!!!! I marked down two tries (8 points) and two powerplay scores (6 points) for Saints which added up to 14 so I don't know how they got 18.

It didn't help because no-one was giving out the scores or scorers and the team sheets didn't have player numbers on, so if you missed the numbers when they were announced you hadn't a clue who the players were. I think the evening should start earlier because by 9.30 it was getting very cold in the grandstand at DP.
