Mick Diveney

After Friday’s match coach Benson explained that Diveney was unavailable to him as he had missed several training sessions after expressing his dissatisfaction at the situation.
Tony said, “Mick was progressing well but once we signed Forber on loan he didn’t feel he was getting the game time or the money he needed to justify the travelling from Durham where he had been working”
” He decided it wasn’t for him any more, so he quit. He had become a valuable member of the squad, so I gave him a few days to reconsider, but he clearly demonstrated his intentions by not getting back to me.
“We must have competition for places at our level and all players must be prepared to fight for a spot. Mick played in nearly every game until Forber arrived and he had become one of three good half backs at the club- a minimum requirement for the squad. He wanted to be playing every week but nobody can be guaranteed that.
The above has been taken from the club website.
I rate Diveney highly and he will be a fantastic half back with more game time but i am also surprised by his reaction but if he feels that his actions are justified that is his choice.
I would like to see him back in an Oldham Shirt soon before he signs for someone else and he comes back to haunt us.

Even look at Friday's game the difference between the two sides was Watson's magical pass to Phil whilst Ratty kicked the ball dead twice on the first tackle with over three minutes remaining.
I hope we can sort this out and bring Mick back to the club because it is us who will be losing out.

Just for the record Mickey Diveney hadn't missed any training sessions prior to him announcing that he was leaving Oldham. He was very committed to Oldham rugby but felt that he had not been given any reassurance that he was a valuable member of the squad. The report in the Oldham Chron isnt entirely correct, he had actually given up his job in Durham to sign for Oldham and be able to attend every training session. He knows he should have got back in touch with Benson but Communication is a two way thing. He is very upset with what has happened as it has always been a lifelong ambition to play for his hometown club. He is very appreciative of all the comments from the fans and is sorry if they feel let down by his actions.
when does the cronie at the chron ever get it right about oldham rugby.

I think it shows that competition for places is needed as it sorts the wheat from the chaff.
With the benefit of hindsight, it shows MD was happier to be in the comfort zone.
That said, I hope he reflects, thinks of it as something to spur him on, and comes back. If he comes back he will be stronger for it, and will reach even higher standards.
C'mon Mick, do the right thing.

Don't know the facts but, that's not the attitude you want to see in such a young player. I'm sure he'll come back to haunt us tho'.
