A straight sets victory in the end. Somewhat inevitable, given the build-up. The BBC even gave Ronald MacIntosh the commentary job, just like last year.
Yes, Mahmut's been in rubbish form. For some reason he reminds me of a younger Ian Bell.
Some good matches so far this year - caught some of the Venus Williams v Date-Krumm match yesterday. Best set of women's tennis I've seen for yonks. The Hewitt-Soderling game today was a nailbiter, too - though not as visually attractive as there was a lot of big-serving (the Venus-Date-Krumm match had plenty of net play/serve and volley stuff)
Weather causing havoc again. No surprise there, really.

Rumour going around Headingley that Wire will have to play the second half with 12 men.
It seems that they forgot to bring the half time oranges, and Solomona ate Chris Bridge instead.
Don't know why he was hungry, as he looked as though he had eaten the whole youth team before the game started.

I watched the same match as just Browny matey and it was indeed a corker. If I was a betting man I'd put some money on that young German girl. How the hell can anyone watch women's tennis these days? Just watched the Murray game and it was quite good then they showed highlights of some women's matches and it was full of that pathetic squealing and grunting. I suppose some of them are worth letching at but the internet makes that all quite academic!

One cloud on the horizon is that Nadal's gone for an MRI scan on his foot, which is a worry.

Do you or anyone else know why the Womens prize money is the same as the mens when the mens matches are the best of 5 sets and the womens the best of 3 sets. Surely the women should be made to play the best of 5 sets as they are getting the same money as the men?How the hell can anyone watch women's tennis these days? It is not as though they are paid per hour. If the womans' game has the same commercial value, then it makes sense.

But it doesn't. So what's the reason? Equality? For less work?It is not as though they are paid per hour. If the womans' game has the same commercial value, then it makes sense.

I don't know, but I'd say that the top women probably generate as much interest, sponsorship and viewing figures as the men's game, apart from maybe Federer and Nadal.Do you honestly think that womens tennis has the same commercial value as mens tennis?

I would be amazed if they did. How many people on the street will be able tell you who are the 2 women in Saturdays final?I don't know, but I'd say that the top women probably generate as much interest, sponsorship and viewing figures as the men's game, apart from maybe Federer and Nadal.
Go on the streets tomorrow and ask who is in the mens final, and i reckon it will be 4 times more.

I might just do that, before legging it down to the bookies (this being mens' semi-finals day).
Maria Sharapova (one of the finallists) is one of the biggest earners in the sport, for herself and for events that she takes part in. In the same bracket you could probably put the Williams sisters and Kim Clijsters.
Potentially, if she wins a Grand Slam final, Caroline Wozniacki would join that number.

No, but that has nothing to do with the effort put in.
It clearly has the same market value.

No one was on about effort, and its silly to think that womens tennis has the same market value as mens tennis. Quality wise Womens tennis is light years behinds mens, and always will be. Women at grand slams play the best of 3, men play the best of 5. How in these days of equality is it fair that a women gets the same prize winning money as a man when she is doing less? No, but that has nothing to do with the effort put in.
It clearly has the same market value.
Surely the women should play the best of 5, or the men should play the best of 3.

My point, sorry if it was unclear, is that effort has nothing to do with it. If it were, rugby league players would be paid more than soccer players and they are not.
If it were about equality, then there would not be two separate games at all. Men and women can play tennis together, so equality is not an issue in this debate. Women's tennis clearly has a comparable market value to men's tennis. The women have been able to negotiate to get as much (possibly even using equality). It is not relevant though, this is sport and business and fairness does not come into it.
