NRL commission to finally become reality after agreement reached

After 1162 days of bickering, internal politics and grandstanding, rugby league has finally found peace.

An ARL board meeting in Brisbane yesterday agreed on the game's eight commissioners who will administer rugby league into the future.

The lineup: John Grant, Gary Pemberton, Peter Gregg, Wayne Pearce, Catherine Harris, Ian Elliott, Jeremy Sutcliffe, Chris Sarra

"Journalists are meant to be neutral, for God's sake." - Stephen 'Wiggy' Jones

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

To summarise the article in Futtocks' post:

From 300 original nominations the eight chosen are:

  • a director with the Queensland Government's Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership - Chris Sarra
  • a Brisbane IT executive - John Grant
  • a former Qantas and Billabong chairman - Gary Pemberton
  • Leighton Holdings chief financial officer - Peter Gregg
  • a former Australian forward - Wayne Pearce
  • Harris Farm markets founder - Catherine Harris
  • an advertising executive - Ian Elliot
  • a CSR director - Jeremy Sutcliffe
They have to be accepted by News Corp and the 16 NRL clubs.

Is this a format for running the game for the future?
Are these the right sort of people to take control of the game and it's future in Oz?

Should they be accepted these people have high expectations placed on them.
It appears David Gallop has been nodded through to carry on as CEO of the game

I think theres too many people who want whats best for them rather than the game. Its been going on for way too long and too much argueing and I dont things will change much in the future neither. Theres been way too much argueing about who should be in. Queensland wanting two people etc. I dont think Gallop should be anywhere near the new setup. He has done little for the game in the past and his record is hardly outstanding. For me he is just a new Limited Puppet with no balls. The ruling that nobody from a previous Setup should be involved etc is also for me crzy. I dont really care who the 8 people are and where they come from as long as they are the best 8 people to move the game forward not just in Sydney, NSW and Queensland but Australia as a whole. People on a board are there for the good of the game and must be willing to see others viewpoints and add them to any decisions made. I just cant see this happening and can seeing people refusing to see the bigger picture as they dont want to upset their backers in Sydney or Queensland etc.
