For those of us old enough to remember Eddie Waring, just watched a really good programme on Eddie on BBC 4. ( should be repeated again sometime ) I didnt realise how much influence Eddie had at the BBC.
Eddie really helped put RL in the spotlight. When ever sporting events were being called off all over the country, RL seem to get played on the BBC on a Saturday afternoon, with Eddie in his trllby commentating.
Sadly he got a lot of stick when he was on its a knock out, and appeared on different shows on the BBC. It was sad to see Eddie at the end of his career not being able to recognise players when he was commentating.
When he was filling in time before the kick off, he used to tell you about letters he had had from people. Im sure it didnt happen but, if you can read this in an Eddie Waring voice. I had a letter from a little old lady in Halifax who wants to know what a knock off is, er er i mean a knock on.

There has never been another comentater like Eddie.

Eddie was THE man in the sixties on Auntie Beeb,he did the lot and didn`t need so called experts like that dickhead Stevo, but it was so refreshing to get top class league when the only other "football" they put on Grandstand were those boring rugby internationals that usually ended up 3 all or 6-3. I read a good book recently about a bloke called Willy Horne who played for Barrow and was the top player in the game in the fifties. He led GB on a couple of tours of Australia and a certain Eddie Waring was a journalist on those tours, but I can`t recall who he worked for. No matter,Eddie took the great game to the nation and I know he was responsible for many people becoming fans who`d never seen the game before. My grandad loved it and it was a highlight for him on a Saturday afternoon to watch the game and listen to Eddie,it didn`t matter who was playing. The game owes him so much.

Excellent biography of Eddie by the same guy reponsible for the TV programme. I got it cheap on amazon recently - excellent well-balanced read.
