He wasn't very good as an Armed Robber........

A BRISBANE tavern manager was the "inside man" reluctantly roped into in a violent 2006 armed robbery staged by two former police officers turned dangerous armed bandits, a court has been told.

The Brisbane District Court was told Paul Vincent Carr, then 39, helped plan a robbery of the Park Ridge Tavern about 1.25am on November 5, 2006, with his cousin's husband Brett Gale - a former police officer and NSW rugby league first grade player.

The court was told Carr repeatedly tried to call off the robbery but Gale told him the robbery had to go ahead because he could not contact the accomplice he had enlisted; fellow former police officer Wayne Alfred Duckworth.

Carr, now 43, was today sentenced to a wholly suspended four year jail term - meaning he walked from court a free man - after pleading guilty to one count of armed robbery in company with personal violence.

Barrister Don McKenzie, for Carr, said the delay in sentencing his client was the result of false claims by Gale and Duckworth that Carr was the "mastermind" who orchestrated the almost "perfect" crime.

He said that claim was shattered when it was later revealed both Gale and Duckworth were implicated in an almost identical robbery of a northern NSW hotel six months before they held up the Park Ridge Tavern.

"I submit my client (Carr) is not a professional armed robber," Mr McKenzie said.

"This was a robbery that was almost perfect in its execution.

"Without him (confessing to police and also implicating Gale and Duckworth) ... authorities would still be investigating this matter."

Prosecutor Megan Heywood said Carr had been approached by Gale about planning a robbery up to six months before the heist.

Mrs Heywood said the pair spent 1 1/2-hours planning the finer details at the Greenbank RSL, including providing a layout of the tavern, details of the safe, where best to park the getaway car and explaining that turning off of an illuminated XXXX beer sign was the queue to stage the robbery,

The court was told Carr attempted to call the robbery off during a telephone call and a text message which read: "BG (Brett Gale) all bets are off. I can't do it ... I'm sorry mate."

However, Mrs Heywood said Gale and Duckworth, wearing dark clothes, balaclavas and armed with pipes, stormed into the tavern, ordered two female employees and Carr into an office and demanded the safe be opened.

She said Carr was so nervous he "bungled" opening the safe and one of the bandits took over.

The court was told the bandits got away with $63,000, but had missed a further $52,000 in cash which was sheltered from view by one female staff member.

Mrs Heywood said Carr first passed himself off as an innocent victim, but later confessed to police and arranged for Gale to make admissions during tape recorded "pre-test call."

In April 2007, Gale and Duckworth, now aged 47 and 50, were each jailed for fours years for their role in the robbery, with their sentences suspended after they served 12-months and 10-months respectively.

Gale, a former NSW anti-theft squad officer, also had a promising football career having played for Wests and Eastern Suburbs in Sydney and the Australian Schoolboys, while Duckworth was a former detective.

Judge Brian Devereaux, SC, in sentencing, said "extraordinary features" of the case meant Carr did not have to spend anytime in actual custody.

Well i remember him playing for Hunslet when we played at Elland Road, before he joined you. A great player was Paul was sorry to loose him. Always gave 100 per cent.

I'll second that. -- it was one of my jobs that season to take the Hunslet "man of the match" from the dressing room to the Directors lounge to be presented with the award. I took Paul more than any otther player that season.

One of my favourite Eagles players of all time. Paul always gave 100% and had a knack of scoring from a yard out when the cover looked to have held him short. A telescopic-seeming arm would shoot out from the ruck and deposit the ball neatly on the line.

Paul Carr is one of two players to have left Sheffield Eagles with one of my hand-painted Sheffield Eagles Teddy Bear badges. The other was Brendon Lindsay.
