Just read on twitter that GS is challenging Morleys claim to 50 caps. Taking it up with the RFL apparently. Says lots of his caps weren't even proper Tests. Pretty insulting IMO.

I suppose it depends on how you regard England caps before the demise of GB. Outside of World Cups nobody at the time really considered them to be full caps in the way that playing for GB was. It was effectively equivalent to the England Knights team.

However, this does highlight a problem for stattoes.

While GB was in operation there were a fair few England internationals which were essentially 'Knights' teams, ie fringe players and youngsters.

It's not comparing like with like.

Nowadays, an England cap is the maximum you can aspire to. In the late 90s and early 00s the federation shield and european cup England teams were clearly not full strength.

This is no reflection on Morley BTW. I imagine most if not all of his apps were in full-strength sides.

At least we knew where we stood with GB caps.

Just had a look at the England RL website and they have a neat list of all the players. It's quite interesting.

I suspect that Schoey is upset because he's always been known for having 46 caps, which is the joint British record with Mick Sullivan (who also, BTW, has 3 England caps, which would put him on 49).

But he also has 3 England caps that never get counted. That would take him to 49.

Morley, however, gets his England caps counted. If his were counted the same way as Garry Schofield's then he'd only have 30 caps.

I can see where Schoey is coming from. It needs to be one way or the other.

My take on is that the England matches should be classified as full internationals according to whether they were the top level of internationals at the time.

It depends on what he's whinging about, players get caps for representing counties and countries, an international cap is a cap be it for England or for GB, if its a test cap then the games played have to be recognized as a test.

So has Morley got 50 caps, 50 international caps or 50 Test caps.

If he had a query about the subject he could have gone about it quietly in the right quarters.

I hope Morley has a stormer on Saturday even more so now.

That's as maybe, but it doesn't mean he hasn't got a point.

All of his caps were in proper test matches - and don't forget only GB, Australia, NZ and France had test status during his playing days.

Morley has England caps for games against such opposition as South Africa, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Wales etc. Hardly a fair comparison.

Its a fact that modern day players are going to end up with more caps than previous generations because the volume of internationals is so much greater now. It depends on whether you think there should be a distinction made between test caps and international caps.

Sure. GS comes across as petty & bitter and is a bit insulting to AM who rightly deserves his day in the sun.

GS is probably technically right though and the whole thing needs looking at (another day).

Would they? Since Super League started lots of rugby leagues past has been airbrushed away or pushed to one side.
