Apparently anyone applying after that has to play in the merit league. Whether that actually happens is another question though for example if all the Barrow clubs voted to switch en masse from 2013 I doubt they'd ruin the merit league or risk losing them from summer to enforce the rules.

I was told this wouldnt necessarily be the case as the league want divisions to be as competative as possible and would structure the leagues as such. Dont suppose there is anything to stop clubs from applying now then later deciding its not for them and not actually taking part.

No but I can't imagine them being allowed in midseason either so unless a load of clubs were switching would mean 9 months off season maybe with a few cups.

You don't have to imagine too hard......

Besides, can you imagine anyone voluntarily playing ' the likes of Queens' if they were in a merit league?

Can't see the Yorkshire clubs moving to summer but do think more North West clubs will move ready for the 2012 league campaign.

Why are many of the NW Counties clubs moving but very few Yorkshire based sides?

I am not really sure maybe BARLA has a bigger influence there, but they seem to be against the switch to summer

A few possible reasons I can think of:

1. If lots of clubs switch there's a good summer standard but if few do there's big standard gaps in the region
2. The Yorkshire Men's League is perceived as a NCL reserve league
3. The strength of the Pennine League
4. All Lancashire juniors are now summer
5. The top NWCL sides are switching to summer due to having NCL ambitions, very few of the top Pennine League teams could ever meet NCL criteria so have little to lose ruling themselves out from ever joining (which sticking with winter is in effect doing).

Though there's no one killer reason really and some strange anomalies (e.g. why are Warrington clubs so much more pro summer than say Barrow clubs)

Also when you say very few Yorkshire sides in fact not one first team who didn't already play summer has signed up for the Yorkshire Men's League

The NW is where the RFL started their dividing line in the heartlands, the RFL have now appointed Stuart Sheard as the person to promote summer in Yorkshire.

I remember Mr Sheard years ago at a Doncaster and district meeting trying to get the 20+ teams to breakaway from the West Yorkshire Sunday league and form a South Yorkshire league, when that failed he got himself some position within BARLA and shortly afterwards the South West Yorkshire area was born and the clubs new and old ended up in the Pennine League

The RLC in Yorkshire was a very good standard and most of the clubs had NCL or a high standard regional players in their squads, with the NCL going summer it has taken away the player source that was available to most of the clubs who had recently cropped up.

Why have so many Lancashire players and coaches gone to rugby union  I'll tell you what son, "I would sooner have a Tyke in the trench than a Benedict Arnold"

It was always a false picture.

I wondered when that happened. Didn't you end up in the Humberside League once?

Apparently the Oldham and Rochdale clubs switched from the Pennine to NWC League after a dispute over ID cards so guess that's when the Pennine League started looking east.

Why did West Yorkshire Sunday die off was it mainly clubs going to the Yorkshire League?

As for divide and rule well there was already a lot of enthusiasm for summer in Lancashire, just not quite enough for close leagues so some of the top clubs went against their preference and stayed winter. The RFL have worked to overturn that and get enough clubs in summer of a good standard (partly with the carrot of future NCL membership) in the hope that the rest follow. Seems a good idea but there will always be the possibility of winter RL either in the Pennine League or a rump NWCL

All of the practical reasons stated are relevant, but you also have to take into account that people in Yorkshire have a different 'psyche' than their neighbours on the sunnier side of the Pennines.

You mean Yorkshire folk are 'inbred' when it comes to decision making?

Do you think the Yorkshire based sides will move in the future when/if summer rugby is a success elswehere?

There is more than 5. Like I said you will be surprised at some of the others. There is a list going out this week of who has already applied or has at least shown an interest in switching.

That would explain the rumours surrounding Kippax. I wouldn't be surprised if a few smaller clubs switched but also it wouldn't surprise me if Upton follow Fryston (they've been supportive of summer before).

I doubt there will be anywhere near the numbers there are from Lancashire though.
