Hello

I am looking to start an open age rugby team in the s8 area.

We have the name Norton Knights and have a kit sponser ready. We need the players and the ground.

All ages and abilities welcome and so are people just wanting to give it a go and see if its for them.

Any body interested email me or reply to this topic. Training day and time will be set when numbers are sorted and based on what the majority can do.

I am taking my coaching level 2 badge in april and hopefully when we have had a few sessions we can have a friendly and be entered into a league.

Any ground reccomendations or somebody who can offer a ground also please email me

Many Thanks

Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Could I ask why you would want to start a RL club in Sheffield?

Sheffield is a very big City, with a small amount of RL followers, sad but true I think.

Hillsbrorough Hawks, are a cracking Rugby League Club and have a great Open Age side. A club tried to form a few years ago and unfortunatley ended up foding because of the lack of players involved throughout the season.

There is also a summer RL side than runs from Dronfield.

Why dont you go down to the Hawks and get involved, either playing or ask about joining the coaching staff = Sure they would welcome you!

I personally think that Sheffield could only facilitate one Open age team - Alot of the players at Hillsborough come through the ranks, or come from the good relationships with the Uni sides, and as sad as it is to say it, its very rare that a player just turns up because he fancies a game or used to play when he was younger.

If you could get a kit sponsor and a few players then it may be worth speaking with Hillsborough or me through here and seeing how we could help each other ( I kn ow theres a a possibility of Hillsborough getting a 2nd team for next season)

Thanks

That's good advice from ucantbeatRL.

If you think Hillsborough is too difficult to get to (and it can be a drag getting across the city for training) think about pitching in with Dronfield or with my team (North Derbyshire) for a season to see what the issues are before launching in. You need a lot more effort and help than you think to start a team - have you got players already? Do you know how much it costs to run a team (ground hire, food, referees, equipment etc.)? Summer or winter?

Feel free to contact me on midlands_rl@btinternet.com with any questions at all.

Yeah As Tim quite rightly said, you have two great clubs close to you, both are a development set up - The Chargers failed to raise a team last year, due to lack of players which was a great shame, as Tim and all involved down there have made an excellent club!!

As Tim says, it's very expensive starting a club, pitch hire, insurances, kit, balls, water bottles, referees fees, first aid kit, etc. so would need some serious thought.

I would definitely suggest linking with Hillsborough , Chargers or the Drifters for a few ears first mate, as living in Sheffield, and loving RL ... I have witnessed first hand, how easy it is to lose players and watch teams fold.
