Cumbrian Rugby League stars Sol Roper and Rob Purdham will conduct the draw for the third round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground next Tuesday (March 13).
Roper, a scrum-half who played in two Wembley finals with Workington Town in 1955 and 1958, will draw the home teams with former Whitehaven and London Broncos player Purdham drawing the away teams.
Roper’s involvement celebrates the 60thanniversary of Workington Town’s last Wembley victory, an 18-10 win against Featherstone Rovers in 1952. Bev Risman, the son of Whitehaven’s Wembley winning captain from 1952, will also be in attendance along with other Rugby League personalities.
The draw will take place around 7.30pm in the J.J. McKeown Bar at the Recreation Ground and will feature as part of a Rugby League evening broadcast live on BBC Radio Cumbria.
Attendees can also have their photographs taken with the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Admission to the draw event is strictly by ticket only – tickets costing just £2, which includes a hot buffet supper, are available from Whitehaven RLFC.
