Sheffield were just too good for us today! everything they did was at speed and they punished us for every mistake.Everytime they moved the ball wide we were in trouble,Menzie Yere was frightening!Couldnt fault anyone for effort and for a brief moment looked as though we were going to get back into it at 24-16.We are still adjusting to this level of rugby,im sure we will be better for the experience and hopefully can bounce back against Dewsbury next weekend.

Did any history buffs note today's match attendance figure?
Today's attendance at the Don Valley Stadium was, 1,815. Ring any bells?
1815 was Napoleon's Waterloo and today it was ours - or so it would seem.

Bit harsh that Blue Monkey as Dave has said,we didn't play to bad and our discipline in the first half was excellent,Sheffield are no mugs having made the Grand final last year and we need to smarten up against teams like them. I would still like to see mort returned to fullback and find a way of getting Hawkyard in the backs as well.Did any history buffs note today's match attendance figure?

If we show the same committment against Dewsbury next week then I think we will be getting our first league win.
Good representation of Swinton fans there today as well.

Without getting boring, i think BM is referring to the significance of the defeat rather than the fact we took a licking. i think that its a watershed moment from Swinton after all they (sheffield) have not been beat yet this season and we have scored 22 points against them. the same as Leigh and more than any other team. i think this season could be a good un.

Just thought I'd put a light hearted bit of fun into this by noting that the match attendance was 1,815 when the Battle of Waterloo happened in 1815.
A slightly similar thing happened when we played at London Skolars a couple of years ago when the final score was Skolars 16 Lions 66. 16-66! ring any more bells? London?
1666 was the year of the Great Fire of London.

In short the result was about as good as we could expect. For me the league is split in 2, top half were not really going to match but he bottom half is wide open. So next week is massive! Get a win early, come on lions.

I didn't expect to concede 56, however on the other hand i didnt think we would score 4 tries. I was thinking a 36-10 sort of scoreline. Sheffield are a brilliant side in this division and will finish in the top 2-3 and we must give them credit, they attacked in some style and at unbelievable pace. For me numbers 1-4 for sheffield would get a game every week at Super League level and their pack had some size and drive.
From our point of view, i thought our best players were the Hawkyard brothers, Higson and Ainscough. Ainscough made a couple of nice breaks and showed a few really nice touches. Darren Hawkyard, well what can you say? He has been hands down our best player this year, without fail he hits the opposition line hard both with and without the ball, fantastic again. Higson took his chances well and displays similar levels of commitment to DH, great effort.
Im not too upset by this result, i firmly believe we will beat the likes of York, Dewsbury, Hunslet and Keighley in the league and who knows maybe we can cause a couple of teams some trouble above us?
PS Rob Foxen and Gavin Dodd need to seriously improve their defense, it wasnt good enough at CH1 level, so it certainly isnt going to cut the mustard at this level, they were really found out today on occasions. But both seem to offer something in attack.

Agreed our defense on the flanks was continually exposed yesterday.Maybe worth sacrificing some attacking potency for someone who may be better equipped defenseively.Alex Hurst on one of the wings for me!

A predictable defeat, a perfectly respectable total of "points for", but disapointing "points against", albeit Sheffield are looking good.
I'm starting to wonder if Gavin Dodd has got something big on Steve McCormack. When the opposition has the ball he simply cannot be relied on. At least he's on the wing rather than at centre this season, but if the squad really was fully fit to pick Dodd ahead of Kevin Penny and Ian Mort in that position is very questionable to say the least. Neither of the last two mentioned has done much wrong in my view.
No appearance from Kevin Penny for the last 2 games, with no news of any injury. This doesn't ring true, does it? Perhaps the Sale RU link really was a sign that he's already unsettled. If so, it would probably be better to have it in the open and then move on.
Rob Foxen isn't much better than Dodd defensively, particularly when it comes to one-on-one defence and the need to read the opposition's movement across the pitch. There was enough evidence of that last season against inferior opponents, albeit he had Dodd inside him for the most part and that compounded things. This year he has less of an excuse, with the new centres. We have seen enough now to conclude he will not be a strong player at Championship level as a winger. Again, to pick him ahead of Kevin Penny especially - I simply cannot be having that as a genuine team selection, personally!
If Steve Mac persists with picking these guys as his first choice wingers, it won't take Championship coaches long to identify the weaknesses and play on them. Plus, the likes of Penny and Mort won't be satisfied kicking their heels and will be off to pastures new.
Felt sorry for Danny Meakin and Lee Wingfield losing out, while other forwards who have been less effective were picked ahead of them. And that was despite the bench being heavily biased towards forwards, a bit out of balance and meant there wasn't any real scope to change things when it became evident where the weaknesses were.
Good luck to Chris Tyrer by the way - it appears he's been given a chance at North Wales.

Yes I too was surprised that the two dual registered got the nod in front of Wingy and Meakin i'm not sure if there is some ruling stating that dual players have to be played.??A predictable defeat, a perfectly respectable total of "points for", but disapointing "points against", albeit Sheffield are looking good.

I thought both foxen and dodd were outstanding against workington so do drop them after that would need justifying. Now they have had a weaker game it can be. Wasnt at sheffield so cant comment .
I thought wingfield was weak against worky.
As for dual regs we have been calling for them for weeks then complain when theyre picked? Someone had to miss out.
