All sorts of reasons why - sad death of my Dad and grandparents (who lived in Swinton), my own kids growing up in a Football 'hotbed' (Derby) and avidly supporting their local team (Season Ticket for last 7 years), the travelling cost and distance, apathy around the lack of 'Swinton-ness' left in the club and of course lack of success on the field, though always kept an eye on the Lions results.
I managed to get my 17 yr old son to Don Valley yesterday for his first taste of live RL - a sport he's never really taken any interest in - which he agreed to under duress only 'just so I didn't have to go on my own' .
I expected the Lions to be heavily defeated and still enjoy it nevertheless, but when he was cheering Higson going over for the Lions 3rd try when the comeback just might have been on, just like he'd cheer a Rams goal, it really made my day - and whilst I wouldn't say he's now hooked, I'm hopeful a trip to LSV might just be in the offing!
The all round experience of Rugby League is still so much better than pro-football, both from the match day experience (no segregation, generally banter not vitriol) and the spectacle itself - players playing hard and honestly, general speed of play, very few long stoppages.
