I've attached a poster for people to print off and stick in their car, house, shop, office advertising the next match....obviously it's only a few days away so I'll be a bit more prompt with the one for the next home game!!!!

Very smart and slick poster Paul, but!!!

Surely it's surplus to requirement to add another line saying "Rugby League Club". After all, it's the name of the TEAM which should really only appear on match posters and in fixture lists and not the name of the CLUB. I think I saw it in the Sheffield programme that their next match was against "Halifax RLFC" instead of simply just "Halifax". You'll see this sort of thing when they quote a match against a team which does not have/or used to have a barmy RFL/Sky imposed (phony) nickname. It's as if they're at a total loss if a club's (Halifax, Whitehaven, Hull, St Helens) name has only one word. I mean to say, how potty it would look if football fixtures were listed as...

Man City FC v Man United FC
Chelsea FC v Everton FC
Aston Villa FC v Blackburn Rovers FC.

I rest my case FC.

Hopefully we shall soon see some of the colour team posters complete with fixtures that can be displayed around the town.

Without wishing to enter into protracted discussion about this.....

Keith, if I were to have a poster in my car announcing a match simply as Stockport v Liverpool would anybody know whether it was rugby (league or union), association football, American football, basketball, tennis, squash, bowls, bridge, tiddlywinks etc or lacrosse (the actual sport I was thinking of).
To the Swinton Lions faithful such as ourselves and others on this forum it would be obvious that Swinton Lions v Dewsbury Rams was a rugby league match but the main reason behind the posters is to attract new support - hence the need for "Rugby League Club".

I suppose I could, as you suggest, omit this pertinent fact from future posters but would fear a backlash from disappointed bowls clubs who may turn up at LSV one Sunday afternoon in their Shearings coaches expecting a sedate game, a cuppa and a crumpet only to be greeted by the almighty spectacle of the greatest game on Earth. Mind you, I think even the LSV stewards would have their hands full if it then kicked off - there'd be Grippo, pickles and flasks flying everywhere!!!

I would love to be able to just put something as simple as Man Utd v Man City but fear that our following at present is slightly less than either of theirs!!!

....???.....Hull FC....???......

This "Hull FC" situation came about when the club (rightly) ditched their silly "Sharks" tag. I do NOT see the point in Hull having FC tagged on apart from it being the club's name, i.e. Hull Football Club. They managed to avoid confusion with their East Hull neighbours, Hull Kingston Rovers without a problem since the dawn of RL time as simply "Hull" so why add on "FC"?
These modern day name tags are a great big no-no for me, I absolutely HATE them, and they’re so alien and, in virtually every case, are so false and phoney, having been imposed on the game by big money interests and certain ego builders in the sport who all really relish going down the same road the Aussies have taken with their affairs. Rhinos, Vikings, Bulldogs etc, how YUK is that?
I know that our tag "Lions" (and Oldham's "Roughyeds") is totally genuine and historically correct, but if it was up to me (pity it isn't) I'd revert to simply "Swinton". After all, the first thing that came to mind when you heard the word "Swinton" was rugby league, Station Road and all that. Similarly the word "Wigan" meant only one thing, RL, Central Park and cherry-and-white jerseys.

OK, I've had my say, rant over, you can all clobber me now.

Sorry Paul, I see your point, but in general I still maintain what I said. It's probably the generation gap here. The match posters in my youth left you in no doubt what the message was all about. A typical poster for a Lions match at Station Road would be much bigger (3' x 2') and in the club's (other clubs were the same) colours on a white background. The word "Swinton" at the top would be fairly small as it didn't need to be in large letters because people knew at a mere glnce what the message was, i.e., a Swinton home match. Just below was a simple "V" for versus of course. Then came the main focal point of the poster, apart from the date and KO time, the name in huge block capitals of Station Road's visitors, be it "WIGAN", "SALFORD", "WAKEFIELD TRINITY" or "OLDHAM" etc.
Now, those WERE match posters which really made you sit up and take notice.

Keith, I agree that the names such as Wolves, Cougars etc are surplus to requirements.
I would love everyone to think firstly of our rugby league team whenever the name Swinton is mentioned but sadly, as you're aware from when we talked to people on the precinct last summer, the majority these days are unaware that Swinton still has a professional team.
Hence why I want as many people as possible to put up the posters (including the "Rugby League Club" part) to spread the word and boost our attendances.
