So, roughly how old is/was your friends Grandad? what years did he play? have u any more information?

I've just looked in the bible and can't see any Benny Goode listed in the representative honours section.

I have finally found out the information about Benny that you asked for and this is the reality about how he came North to Swinton RLFC.

Right then, here we go.

I spoke with a fellow supporter Chris Haslam only yesterday (Monday 28th March) and he told me the basic story about the elusive Benny in question and it is much the same as I could recall.
Chris is a couple of years old than me (I'm 64) and was once active in Swinton RLFC's Supporters' Association especially during the Lions' 1960s' hey day.
I said to him, "Do you recall someone called Benny Goode?" and he said (as I half expected) that he most certainly did and remembered Benny very clearly.
The story goes that he did in fact "come North" to Swinton in the '30s when he was signed as a player by the club. However, as a player, he did not turn out to be as promising as was expected. This was because he was signed by mistake for another young fellow Welshman who was perhaps located in the same part of his hometown in Wales.
Although he did not actually become a Swinton player as such, he stayed in the town where he eventually met and married a local girl, had a family and continued to follow and support the Lions for the rest of his life.
If you are looking for his existing family today, I've looked in the Phone Book which covers this area and there one person called "Goode" in the Swinton & Pendlebury area who may or maybe a relative.

Thanks for the information! Poor Benny and the case of mistaken identity. I wonder if they ever signed the other player? Ah yes great great uncle Ebeneezer Goode, I remember him well.
