Thought I'd written enough here yesterday to see me through a couple of months at least, but for goodness sake .........

who on earth let loose a novice, children's television script writer, on that (presumably intended to be friendly and amusing) bit of limping, Unionesque, egg-catcher-rugby-joke-enthusiasts-for-the-use-of drivel, screened to end this lunchtime's show?

Excellent commentary from Dave Woods on all the match clips, knowledgeable comment from Tanya Arnold's two `opinion' guests, all admirably co-ordinated by Tanya, and then - one can only imagine the producer - goes and insults them all, by adding one of the most unnecessary `bits of an appendage' I have ever had the misfortune to bump into.

Perhaps if it had not been quite such an amateur looking rabbit it might have .......... no. No hope for it at all.

I suggest a rapid injection of euthanasia. Put it out of its misery immediately, poor thing, because (to my horror) I was given to understand that the format is the BBC's latest version of an appropriate wind-up for the show.

Oh dear!

The problem being all the non-Rugby Krap that fills the spaces between the action, I watch it on Sky Player, because it's only available down here at 2.30am, and I can FF>> through the non Rugby bits.

So no idea what your talking about, if you don't want to listen to the BBC's drivel, don't!

That is as you see it.

And I can well understand that you have little reason to sympathise with someone criticising the programme, who is able to watch it at a normal time of day, when you are obliged either to stay up until a ludicrous hour of the morning or sit watching it on a computer.

The BBC's Rugby League match coverage is, after all, intended to accommodate primarily all TV Licence holders who are supporters of the game; in particular those who cannot afford to subscribe to Sky Sports, but also those who do not feel they should be required to do so in order to watch the game they want to watch, simply because they reside in (what common opinion holds to be) the Rugby Union dominated south.

After all, those who reside in the north of the country are not similarly deprived of the opportunity to watch the BBCs far more extensive Rugby Union coverage.

That said, you seem to suggest that I should not object when the BBC demeans (both itself and) the game, by adding fatuous, childish drivel to the end of an otherwise perfectly acceptable sports programme. I say, "Oh yes I should."

Not only should I object, so should all fans of the game. Just as they should object even more strongly, to the astonishing fact that BBC thinks it appropriate (in its role as national broadcaster sustained by a mandatory, nationwide licence fee) to arrange programming in a way that effectively `quarantines' (it could be argued) the entire southern half of the population against infection by `a Northern sport'.

I don't know about anyone else, but the sole premise upon which that kind of action could be based scares the hell out of me.

Discrimination by a parastatal broadcaster? Been there, watched that once, seen the ghastly unintended outcome!

But putting that rather more serious point aside: large numbers of us now spend up to seven (necessary) hours of a normal eight-hour working day, with our eyes glued to a computer screen. In so doing, we are virtually isolated from normal human intercourse. It is essentially desirable, therefore, that none of us should find it necessary to spend our free time similarly glued - not even on a `one hour, once a week' regular basis.

The reasons for that being so many and so well covered elsewhere in recent years that I won't waste band-width writing any more of them here.

:-)

Ever seen "Take it like a fan" or "Soccer A.M"? Both are self mocking partially comedic ventures with only a loose association with the game they purport to cover. I'd have thought it would be worthy of some praise given that it gave RL about an hours coverage at a time not exclusively reserved for sufferers of insomnia or anyone trying to avoid sleep apnia.

As for the "Egg Chasers" thing.... its only a bit of fun for Gawds sake. I sat laughing out loud at it (as did the kids) - which takes a lot. I thought the best bit was that even with the addition of cgi stars & special effects, Caravan Park still looked like a dump

I wrote this a couple of months ago for http://1895sports.co...er-league-show/

Now, with a renegotiated contract, The Super League Show has a regular slot late on a Monday evening with all the matches included. Thank goodness for that. But is it on nationally at this time? Nope! So no-one gives a monkeys about the viewers in the south then? I thought Rugby League was no longer just a northern sport? What about Rugby League fans in London for example who have cable and not Sky so can’t tune into the northern broadcasts? Don’t the RFL and BBC want them to be London Broncos fans?

Next week’s show for viewers nationally starts at 3.15am stuffed between the news channel night blurb and a Spanish programme called “Mi Vida Loca” which is apparently “Spanish teaching via an intriguing drama”. Now that’s really going to get the casual cockney viewer watching!

The Super League Show is a marketing tool we need to utilise as a sport. Had this been nationwide properly when the old Celtic Crusaders were still around in Super League then they may, just may, have attracted more fans and more importantly, investors. I tell a lot of fans outside of the north that there’s a “Rugby League version of Match of the Day” and despite liking Rugby League, virtually none of them know about it. One of my colleagues at Wales Rugby League has said that he’s only ever seen it once as “it’s on too late and I can’t be bothered Sky plussing it” and he works in the game! He didn’t know that you could tune into it in BBC in the north to watch it at an earlier time either, but as I said, that’s not the point.

I know that viewers can see the show on the iPlayer or on Sky Digital etc etc, standard line from all at Auntie, but the point is that we want viewers all around the country, many of whom have not have seen much Rugby League, to stumble over this programme and see what a great sport we have. To do that, this has to be national, properly. That’s why, that if this is a new contract like I’ve been led to believe, I’m disgusted at the negotiators for not taking all Rugby League fans into account especially when there’s so much positive effort from other sections of the RFL to expand the game.
About time I updated this.

I know its a while since I've had a Sky Sports subs but even the SL show with the eggchasers drivel (for 2 mins out of an hour) is better than Boots N All was serving up which was basically ads for the next set of Sky games, with ads in between that as well.
Tanya is an improvement on Harry G, but the SL program timing isn't.

To be fair it has improved a hell of a lot.

Egg chasing nonsense excluded.

I'd say it was the best RL "magazine" show out there, as Padge says, with the exception of egg chasers. Improved about 100% from last season, substantially better viewing figures too I hear, maybe a better time and nationwide will follow if these are maintained?

Must be you - although they only showed the tries, the sin bin and the red card - about 90 seconds worth of action in all.

I thought Luke George and his dad came across rather well in their feature piece. Some good footage of Wilf in action, too.

In general, the show is much improved, and we must remember that 'Egg Chasers' has, by the nature of the concept, only got a limited lifespan. Hopefully, something better will replace it once all the SL clubs have had their go.

The on-screen player tweets is an excellent idea.

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes
