Didn't the Wire v Saints game have a handful of other SL games up against it too? That figure is pretty good.ESPN.

It's a different sport played at a different time and sometimes on a different channel. It has no relevance to Rugby League.

While I like seeing these figures can we not leave off the Union ones?

I quite like seeing them. They're very handy when I'm out banging the RL drum.
Rumour going around Headingley that Wire will have to play the second half with 12 men.
It seems that they forgot to bring the half time oranges, and Solomona ate Chris Bridge instead.
Don't know why he was hungry, as he looked as though he had eaten the whole youth team before the game started.

But why are we so insecure that we have to compare everything we do to Rugby Union?
Plus you're not comparing apples with apples. ESPN clearly has nowhere near the same number of subscribers as Sky does and I wonder what viewing figures we would get if we went up against the nation's 3pm Football program.

I don't see it as insecurity, it's a relevant rival sport that provides a good reference point for what we're doing. If it upsets you less, maybe the top 10s could be posted from now on so we could compare how we're doing.

I always think this is an odd argument, certainly when you're comparing non-terrestrial channels. Nobody watches a channel by accident, be it RL on SS1 or Creationist News on the GOD Channel. 250k+ people are enjoying RL on Sky Sports and that's a good thing; if union is getting fewer viewers on ESPN, it's because they made a decision to take the wonga and take a hit on viewing figures... who knows, maybe they thought more people would subscribe to ESPN so they could see the rugger.

And also a sport which is widely trumpeted as being vastly more popular than ours.I don't see it as insecurity, it's a relevant rival sport that provides a good reference point for what we're doing.

Except as an indication of how many people might watch if we ever left Sky.

Funny you should say that. Catalan/Warrington yesterday was up against pretty much a full football league schedule (and also every other SL club playing when it was on), and Fev/Cas although a cup tie is up against the 3pm's again on Saturday and the grand national.
I guess we'll find out a week on Monday when the final stats for this week come out.

It's pretty good compared with previous years, but still a bit down on the previous week's Fiday night match.Didn't the Wire v Saints game have a handful of other SL games up against it too? That figure is pretty good.

Agreed. The constant comparisons with what RU does in some many things in RL gets very boring.
RU's popularity is based on the strength of their international game (6 Nations, World Cup). The club matches have never been huge audience pullers on Sky.And also a sport which is widely trumpeted as being vastly more popular than ours.

That's not the perception of the average bloke on the Clapham omnibus. They believe what they read in the papers. If you told them that RL walloped (or even got close to) RU at club level in viewing figures, they'd say you were making it up.RU's popularity is based on the strength of their international game (6 Nations, World Cup). I'd argue that lack of interest in Wakefield dragged the viewing figures downIf I remember aright then the Saturday game was London - Wakey. If so, that doesn't do much for the 'London's essential for the Sky contract' argument.

To use the opposite example they could easily publish the figures for their 6 nations games and put them up against our figures for internationals on Sky. The different is up to 25 times the audience.
It's funny how we don't see those figures published as a comparison.

Maybe we should, it might open a few eyes as to how important international sport is if we are to grow our public appeal. I'm a massive fan of international RL and where union trumps us is its ability to fill stadia and get people interested in internationals.
