Gaz Middlehurst received a 6 match ban tonight :(

I heard he just got a caution! Now I hear Carvell got a 2 match ban for kicking?

Seeing as he wasn't hurt, and having been kicked himself in the tackle it seems a bit steep.Nobody gets so many in SL
.He had previous though.Going to miss him a lot.

When you say 'he has previous', is that from his amateur days? If it was, I didnt know that stays with you in the pro. game

I get the feeling that the superleague players are getting off with much lighter sentences than players in the championship.

Is it possible that they are getting lighter suspensions because they are able to make personal appearances and plead their case as they are full-time pros.
Whereas the championship players cannot afford to take time off work to state their case and plead guilty to get a slightly shorter suspention.
Doesnt seem in any way to be a fair system does it? :angry2:

I do not think you are far of the mark ornit, however it has always been the same at our level. Three incidents that stand out for me over the years to demonstarte unfairness where the Latham Tawaih/Richard Agar incident at Featherstone where Latham got a 3 game ban for adjusting Agars nose, Latham appealed straight away and ended up getting 5 games. Latham's record was unblemeshed, he had never even been sin binned prior to this in a Hornets shirt.
Then there was the John Hill incident again at Featherstone, where he belted at Feath player under massive provocation from two Feath players and ended up with 4 games. Surely self defence?
Leroy Joe assualts Dave Stevo Stephenson (who never to my knowledge played again for us) at Whitehaven, Leroy appears in person at Red Hall so not to get banned for the paly offs and gets off!!!!!
It is not as if the SL players get that much bigger fines either..

What i havee never understood is how certain players can do what they do in SL in front of 10,000 fans, live on Sky in front a TV audience and get told to stop being a naughty boy upon leaving Red Hall (Ryan Bailey a prime example over the years).
Compare this to a National League player doing the same offence in front of 500 fans and no TV audience and they throw the book at them.
Clearly the SL guys have a duty and obligation to behave more, purely by the amount of people they are setting an example to?

Its an interesting one and Stanky gave us all a good insight into how the RFL run the hearings on Radio Manchester after the Crussaders game.

With regards to Gary, how hard he connected with his foot is irrelavant in my book. He put his boot in there and thats asking for trouble, whilst i think 6 games is harsh, and the lad has been playing out of his skin. I really do not have to much sympathy.
Lets hope he comes back fitter and raring to go. The other plus side is, we could see more of Stephen Bannister now, which could give a stand out U23 from tomorrows game a shot at the bench in the coming weeks?
We have a little bit of squad depth for a change. Whilst losing your current stand out forward is not ideal, it opens the door for other players to try and keep the shirt from Gary.
Phil Bull.

Hopefully my post are viewed as positive, and I cannot be held responsible for causing any offence to anyone associated with this message board

Funny you should mention Featherstone Filipo, I remember an incident a few years ago when we played Fev away.

We got in the ground and it was a lovely sunny day and we sat on the terrace to the bottom side of the main stand and there were a few Fev fans in replica shirts a few steps down. Just then the ref, a certain Ben Thaler often rumoured to come from Featherstone came out to warm up.

Hiya Ben shouted one Fev fan, and with a cheery wave he said "Hiya lads, nice day." He then proceeded to cane us in the penalty count to the tune of 18-5. One penalty he gave the ball bounced back onto the pitch as the players lined up for the tap and one Hornet player pointed to it and went forward to kick it back off and Thaler gave him offside and another penalty.

Another incident with the same official and opponents was at Spotrland.

Fev were expected to win but were struggling against a spirited Hornets team when Robbo charged the kicker and clearly charged down the kick. There was no whistle and the ball bounced to the fullback who was tackled by Robbo who nicked the ball and went under the black dot. Then there was a whistle and a scrum given at the charge down point. Fev rescued a draw with, you guessed it a penalty in front of the sticks late on??????

You know what they say, you can't say Ben Thaler without saying BENT!!!

Pugwash,
I can assure you 100% Thaler is not a Fev fan! he's a Cas fan and if you go to the Fev forum, look at the thread regarding the referee for today's game with Cas (Thaler) and read the thread(also look at the pictures) you will understand that the guy has no alliegence to us whatsoever and neither do we want him to have.
As for SL teams and Championship players getting away with it, we have the same view about SL but not the championship as we get badly treated also. We have had a bad start with discipline this season and because some players have accepted the charges early the sentance has been reduced but certainly SL players do get let off especially Bailey who is one of the dirtiest players in the game in my opinion.

Hi Puggy. I think in that match at Spotland he disallowed at least 5 tries. Some may have been genuine but some were very dubious decisions. I wondered at the time whether this was a record.

So are you having a go at Ben Thaler or referees in general? If we use the latter can we assume that if you were refereeing say Hornets v Wigan, Hornets would win, no problem :D

If you go back through the pages you will see that I rarely blame a referee because I know they very rarely have decided the game outcome. Indeed the game at Fev we were not going to win, but the penalty count was out of all proportion to the way the game was played.

As for Phil's comment, I accept he may not be a Fev fan but the rumour was that he born in Fev but claimed to be born in Wakefield?!?! He may not have decided the game at Spotland, but some decisions really stunk the place out that day!!!

At Crusaders the other week I heard some Hornets' fans have a go at that ref and to be perfectly honest I thought he had a great game, but maybe didn't stamp out the 'rough stuff' early enough and it ended up being a bit of a brawl. The officials at the derby last week were very good but fans from both sides have said he was bad, for both sides, so there you have it.

I certtainly think SL players get less severely dealt with than Championship clubs, but what are we going to do?? You have to go out every week and have the mindset that referees don't knock on, pass forward, miss tackles and lie on at the PTB. Forget about the ref and get on with the game and if you do that you will be better for it.

If Hornets play well tomorrow they can really show Leigh what we can do and win or lose I will be proud of them, what I don't want is to see players bitching about decisions as it destroys the mindset and detracts from the coach's gameplan.

Puggy I've got to disagree with you about last week's officials.

The ref was so so but the touch judges gave him no help at all. I agree that referees don't knock on or give forward passes etc but the number of forward passes missed (for both sides) by the officials was amazing. It needs all three oficials to work together for a good performance.

In over 50 years of watching Hornets I have seen many referees. A few have been good eg Eric Clay, Billy Thompson - most have been OK but a very few have been absymal and out of their depth. Unfortunately the number of poor referees seems to be on the increase. Last season the best referee I saw at Hornets was Monsieur Alibert and he has been in trouble recently.

I have always thought that referees tend to favour the big name teams in that they seem to get the benefit of any doubt.

I was disappointed that Gaz Middlehurst got 6 matches. It was a silly thing to do but I bet a super league player would have got less. I wasn't at the match but from the video the catalyst seems to have been the Crusader's player kicking out in the tackle. It is about time the RL clamped down on this as it can lead to a serious injury.

Anyway hoping for a good match tomorrow and win or lose all I want to see is 100% effort from the lads.

I,ve heard many people questioning whether Mr Thaler was born in wedlock or not never mind Wakefield:wink:
