This supposed leaked letter from Neil Hudgell to fellow Super League members has sparked a mass debate about the financial stability of Rugby League in Britain.

In Australia recently the 'OAK' Penrith Panthers, a team sponsored by a milk company, were asked by the NRL's sponsor Telstra, to remove a fridge because they felt it came into direct contact with their adverts, thus taking away the spotlight on them.

That was a milk company arguing with a telephone communications giant - they are hardly in competition but found themselve embroiled in a war for the spotlight on national TV.

When Penrith were sponsored by Sanyo Phil Gould publically called his side the 'Sanyo Panthers' and it worked, Sanyo paid for that! We now have the 'NRMA Insurance' Brisbane Bronos, the 'Vodaphone' NZ Warriors, North Queensland 'Toyota' Cowboys etc.

This got me thinking about sponsorship in the Super League and how our clubs could consider that as a template to generate extra revenue.

We sold the naming rights to Craven Park to MS3, which isn't a big deal to me; nobody actually calls it the MS3 Craven Park. So what do you think of your club looking at extra sponsorship, such as the 'Hirebase' Hull Kingston Rovers, for instance?

We could swap ideas on charitable giving, tear-jerking TV appeals etc

'Hirebase' Hull Kingston Rovers, for instance?

I have a company suppling ready made cooking pastes of eggs, flour and milk to the fast food industry and would be happy to sponsor the famous Hull KR name.

It's called "Hull Batter".
On 13/2/2013, Hull City's owners the Allams, released a statement in their position as the owners of the KC Stadium Management Committee. One line in this statement read as follows....

"The SMC's principal responsibility is to remain neutral"

think the aussie's have done this for a number of years.. though not as a direct marketing ploy. Can remember Canterbury beating Many in a grand final and one of the canterbury players refering to Many as the 'Pepsi Sea Eagles' in an interview afterwards.. sure there have been other instances also..

The MLS has the New York Red Bulls, obviously sponsored by Red Bull and a great bit of marketing. Not sure what will happen if they ever change the sponsor though.

Do they still make Penguins? The Hull FC Penguins! They do already have a black n white bird as their mascot :)

And they called Wheldon Road 'The Jungle'.

Because of sponsorship by an IT company?
Wasn't it?
The difference being most Australian clubs use a "Blue Chip" company for naming rights, rather than a locally known Corner Shop establishment

Strangely enough Hull once had a panda as their mascot. Manda anyone?

It would be remiss of us to forget the Rotherham Earth Titans.
Astute analysis from a Wigan fan:

Rumour going around Headingley that Wire will have to play the second half with 12 men.

It seems that they forgot to bring the half time oranges, and Solomona ate Chris Bridge instead.

Don't know why he was hungry, as he looked as though he had eaten the whole youth team before the game started.

Coventry City wanted to be known as Coventry Talbot at one time, but the FA wouldn't allow it. PSV Eindhoven (and Bayer Leverkusen) don't really count as they started life as the Philips and Bayer works teams, and are owned, not sponsored by those companies. A slightly different case is the legendary Total Network Solutions, where a team was bought by the company just so they could get their name read out on Final Score every week.

Myself I like the idea of the Oldham Tubular Bandages.

Was it Manda or Amanda? Anyway I remember 'her' debut in front of the Threepenny Stand. The crowd delivered their verdict on the club's attempt to move with the times with a rousing chorus of 'You fat bastud'.

Dave Hadfield later commented that 'there was no hope for some people'.

PSV are a works team, owned by Philips. Eindhoven is pretty much a one company town.
