Yeah. Sensibly avoided the city's name in the title.

What on Earth would be wrong with Derry/Londonderry Broncos?

I probably would have preferred Foyle Broncos, in line with BBC Radio Foyle and Foyle College in the town.

Also they are set to play at the City of Derry Rugby Union club, which will almost inevitably be a largely protestant club anyway.

I'll have to get in contact and see where I can help out, although it looks likely I'll be returning to England soon anyway. Typical!

Foyle Broncos sounds great (in fact it would be a good name for the city) but at least the club are making an effort to appeal to everyone. Hope thet stick around.

Me too, I've no doubt they'll have it tough but it would great if they can carve out a niche there.

Foyle would be a good name for the city but there's so many stubborn people that it would just end up being a third name for the city.

Any fixtures up yet? I'll be over there in October, would be good to be able to see a game.

It's not a proper length season or anything, it will be long finished by October. At least they've increased from 3 to 6 games this year (6 to 8 in Munster)

Yeh, it would still be used informally. Must admit, I'd never heard of Maiden City before this and I live right nearby!

Fair point, I was vaguely hopeful that play-offs might be that late

Maiden as in never been entered! (Relates to the siege.)

AFAIK the City of Derry club is a bit of an exception to that cliche.

Kilkenny's last season was 2008, Tullamore's was 2010 and Carlow's was last year but they pulled out of the national final.

It's still largely protestant, but tied in with the use of Derry as in the 'Apprentice boys of Derry' from the siege. For instance their address is stated as Judge's road, Londonderry.

According to someone I knew from the city, people from the protestant/unionist/British community use, or certainly did use, the name Derry in everyday language, just as residents of Newtownards use 'Ards'; attitudes have hardened as the official name has been up for dispute.

Good, in a way, that the union club keep people guessing by the use of both names.

It takes one person to put the address on a website. I don't think you can draw much conclusion from that.

This is true.

The BBC have the best policy, by which, they use "Londonderry" first of all in any news story and but subsequent references to the city are always "Derry".
