Thatto Heath 29 v 18 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners poor away form continued yesterday going down 29-18 at Thatto Heath Crusaders, although it is still early in the campaign it is something Miners need to fix if they are to have any chance of featuring in the end of season playoffs. Miners were on top in the first half and was making good yards down the middle and easily getting into good ball areas, but once into good ball Miners wasn’t creating enough to threaten the Thatto line, their only reward for all their possession was when Scott O’Brien picked up a Thatto kick inside his own half and break away to score under the sticks, O’Brien converting his try to give the score 6-0 to the visitors. The home side replied about ten minutes later when their half back went through a gap to score and level the scores up at 6-6. Miners hit back on the half hour mark after again making good yards down the middle Dave Rowlands powered over under the sticks from close range, O’Brien converting giving Miners a 12-6 lead. Just before the break Thatto were level after Miners let a kick down field bounce and that was snapped up by their winger who raced into score to tie the game up at 12-12 going into the half time break.
The start of the second half was very scrappy from both teams with neither being able to complete their sets, The home side took the lead for the first time after Miners knocked on in their own half and from the resulting scrum Thatto’s left centre stepped through the defence to score and put them four points in front at 16-12, a few minutes later they found themselves two scores in front after keeping the ball alive they went into score to lead 22-12 going into the final quarter. Thatto wrapped the game up in the final ten minutes going in for their fifth try, Miners scored late on when Scott O’Brien went in for his second of the game to bring the score to 28-18, Thatto had the final say with a drop goal in the final minute to give them a 29-18 victory.
Miners are away to Stanningley next week in the Preliminary Round of the Conference Challenge Cup.
