LET THE DANCE BEGIN - FIRL LAUNCHES THE 2012 SEASON
FIRL (Federation Italian Rugby League), is pleased to present the 2012 season, which will consist of domestic and international activities, and a series of training camps.
We will be starting with the Italian domestic league, the Serie A RL, which will be held from 25 May 2012 until the end of June 23, 2012. The Italian rugby XIII clubs will be trying wrestle the title away from current Italian champions the XIII del Ducato (Piacenza) winners of the last 2 championships.
On Friday, May 11, 2012, FIRL will present the Italian Serie A Championship RL, with the publication of the participating teams, the organisation of the season, the division of the groups, the calendar, venues of the matches, and the home of the Final.
The Italian Seria A RL league championship, will also give the opportunity to coaches of the Italian National Team, led by Paul Broadbent and Carlo Napolitano, to select the best players for the selection of the Lombards and Venetians Lions.
These selected players will compete in the Italian State of Origin game between the best players in the Italian Seria A league, with selection for the National Team up for grabs. This years Italian State Of Origin will be held at Augustan stadium of Este Rugby club where the North east selection, Venetian Lions will try to repeat last years thrilling last minute win 36-34.
With these events, FIRL (Federation Italiana Rugby League) wants to give each player a chance to compete for the much sort after blue Italian rugby league jersey.
Since we are talking about the Italian National team we are obliged to talk about the official European events which the national team will participate. Italy will participate in the two year competition during summer, the European Shield, a tournament between the best emerging teams in Europe.
Italy after winning the 2008 and 2009 event, will again participate after missing the 2010 and 2011edition. This edition will be held over two years and will put the national teams of Germany (winners of 2011), Russia (group winners of the 2010 East), Serbia (winner in 2007 and 2010 round west), and of 'Italy against each other.
Italy will play their first match in Belgrade, June 9, 2012, then will host Germany on the July 7, 2012, ending with match against Russia on September 8, 2012 in Moscow. The Second Half of the European Shield in 2013 will see Italy at home against Serbia and Russia.
The Italian national team will also participate at the European Cup to be held in October 2012 between England, Ireland and Scotland.
This prestigious tournament, the most important European Rugby League tournament will see the participating nations sharpen their weapons with a view to prepare for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
The tournament will start on 13th October, 2012, in Padua against England, then visit the Scottish Highlands on the 20th October, 2012 for the match against Scotland and finish on 28th October, 2012 against Ireland, in Limerick in the den of Munster Rugby union.
FIRL also will begin its courses aimed at developing Rugby League in Italy, organising coaches training courses.FIRL will be organising the first ever Rugby league coaching and refereeing courses to be held in Italy, where qualifying participants will gain a european recognised certificate where they will then be able to promote and spread rugby league in Italy in a correct and safe way.
During the presentation of the 2012 Rugby League planning, F.I.R.L president Daniele Veronese said " As President of FIRL, my primary goal is to work thoroughly to achieve a high caliber of Domestic Championship thanks to the contribution of F.I.R.L coaching staff (Carlo Napolitano and Paul Broadbent), who have the task of improving and advance Rugby League within the Italian clubs.
I also add the objective of increasing the number of participants and the number of registered rugby league clubs in Italy.
The FIRL staff have been productively working over the last few months to achive the objectives of developing rugby league and on the 11 May 2012, we will present the teams participating in the Italian domestic championship the Seria A RL 2012.
The Italian Seria A league, will enable us to select the best italian domestic players for the Italian national side. The F.I.R.L 2012 has a rich international season and there will be a chance for all FIRL enrolled players to wear the tricolor jersey. "
The Coaches course will focus on the basics of rugby league, the principles and understanding of the game.
