Stanningley 0 v 36 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners picked up their first away win of the season yesterday afternoon with a 36-0 victory against Division One strugglers Stanningley on a wet afternoon in Yorkshire to put them through to the first round of the Conference Challenge Cup against local rivals Wigan St Judes in a couple of weeks time. Miners were always in control of the tie against a spirited Leeds outfit and were on the score sheet after a few minutes when Martin Lewis found a gap close to the line to go over and score at the side of the posts, Scott O’Brien converting to give the score 6-0. Shaun Marsh scored the second try on the left and a third followed when full back Sean Pendlebury broke through the Stanningley defence to set up Scott O’Brien who went into score, O’Brien converting both tries to give Miners a 18-0 lead. Miners final try of the half was scored by winger Jason O’Brien on debut after brother Scott’s pin point cross field kick found Jason who grounded in the corner to give the half time score 22-0.
Miners opening try of the second half was scored by Scott O’Brien who went in for his second of the game to give the score 28-0. Miners scored two further tries in the second period through fullback Sean Pendlebury and centre Lee Gittins to wrap up a comfortable 36-0 victory.
Next week Miners are at home to East Hull in the NCL.
