I was listening to 5 Live this morning and they were talking about the retirement of Stephen Hendry and George Riley described him as the greatest snooker play of all time.
Nicky Campbell then asked him who was the greatest footballer in the world today and Riley replied it was Messi before he then asked Riley who was the greatest rugby player in the world today, of either code. Riley's reply was "i'd pick a league player obviously". Brilliant! However, he couldn't decide who it was and said he'd think about it and say it later ..... I then got to work! Didi anyone hear who he chose?

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

The greatest rugby league player in my 22 years of watching rugby league has to be ellery Hanley, he's the reason I switched from football to league.

Would say exactly the same, when I mention how highly I rate Sterling some people seem supprised. Of the current players, after his performances in the 4N last year I would probably put forward ThurstonThe 2 greatest Rugby players i have ever seen play are Mal Meninga and Peter Stirling.

I guess they may never be surpassed due to the contemporary game being so power based as opposed to 'Rugby' based.

At some point power will become so ubiquitous, the only way to beat it will be through skill or 'rugby'.I guess they may never be surpassed due to the contemporary game being so power based as opposed to 'Rugby' based.

He really picked O'Driscoll? Surprising, sounded like he was defo going for a league man, altho he did say the best player had retired which must have been Lockyer. I like Riley tho, always talks the game up.
Best player i've seen I think is probably Robbie Paul at his peak, Newlove was also great in the centres and also Jason Robinson. So many tho to be fair, could probably list 15-20 really great ones.

Reading this thread really brings it home to me how lucky I have been. I have seen so many greats it is hard to decide who is the best.
From my first idol Willie Horne thro Boston, Milward, Bevan,Murphy, Hanley, Davies, Offiah, Edwards the list of British players goes on and on. Added to that I have seen Gasnier,Raper, Beetson, ,Lewis, Stirling,Johns, Lockyer, again the list goes on and on.
Of today's players Marshall and Slater will certainly be up there with the best. Given a bit of time I could probably double that list too.
I really have been blessed.
