Leigh Miners picked up their fourth home win of the season to move them up to fourth in the NCL after finally seeing off a spirited East Hull outfit in the final ten minutes to win 34-16. It was the visitors who opened the scoring after coming out strongly in the first half, Miners switching off from a tap penalty to allow Easts hooker Matty Brooks to dive over for a soft try to lead the game 6-0. Miners hit back when full back Jonny Youds finished off some good play down the right in his first game back after returning from Whitehaven, Youds was involved again a few minutes later when a strong kick return was finished off by winger Sean Pendlebury in what was the first of his four tries, Scott O’Brien converting to give the score 10-6 in favour of the home side. East Hull responded with their second try to edge back in front at 12-10 and was unlucky not to be eight points in front going into the half time break after having a try disallowed for double movement.
Miners come out strongly early in the second half scoring two tries in the opening few minutes, Pendlebury went in for his second followed by centre partner Lee Gittins who went over next, O’Brien converting to give the score 20-12, Joe Harrison scored Miners third try after the break to put them twelve points in front. East Hull got back into the with a third try and from that the visitors were camped on the Miners line having repeat set after repeat set throwing everything they could at the defence, But with Miners digging deep Easts could find no way through. The game was settled in the final ten minutes when Youds and Pendlebury were again involved, Pendlebury breaking from his own half after linking up with Youds from a kick return, Dummying the fullback to race in under the posts, O’Brien converting to put the game out of reach at 30-16. Pendlebury grabbed his fourth try in the last minute to give the final score 34-16.
Next week Miners are away to Wigan St Judes in the first round of the Conference Challenge Cup.
