Who do you think was the fastest man in Rugby League?

Darren Albert was quick as was Craig Calvert, but who was the fastest?

See you all in 11.5 hours.

Take care Eddie Rombo

p.s. Yes I have just come home from a night out and what a great day it was. Huddersfield Town won and Liverpool lost. Just need Dewsbury to win later today and that will top off a great weekend.

I believe John North heading for the bar was the fastest.

As an international sprinter, you'd have to say our very own Greg Ashcroft would have been up there, but with football in hand, I reckon Martyn Offiah would have taken some beating (although I believe he was - by an Aussie in a beach sprint). Currently it could be Jamahl Chisholm, who can't get a look in at Leeds, but beat Kevin Penney and Tom Briscoe by ten yards in the fastest man in rugby competition a couple of years ago - wish WJ would take a look at him. There are a couple of South Sea Island born Aussies who are rated the quickest in the world at the moment - by the Aussies anyway.
My top five Brits:

1. Martyn Offiah
2. Keith Fielding
3.Clive Sullivan
4.Michael Hunt
5. Andy Smith (Dewsbury)

Didn't Berwyn Jones (former long jumper) play for a while- think he was quick, and I nearly found a place for Dave Smith and Jason Robinson.

They might not necessarily have been the best wingers though

Berwyn played for Wakefield in the 60s dont think he played too long I thought he was a sprinter and didnt Leigh have an Olympic spriner who only played the one game in which he scored?.

I would guess that Berwyn Jones was the fastest man to play first team Rugby League, and without doubt the fastest player to represent Great Britain at Rugby League. Radford, Jones (Berwyn), Jones (Ron) and Jones (David) beat a crack US squad at the White City in the 4 x 110 yds relay in a World Record time, and Berwyn was the British 100 metre record holder when he joined Wakefield Trinity. There were, of course, a lot of so called professional sprinters around at the time, who competed in events like the Powderhall Sprint, but the top amateurs were the real flyers.
Two other possible contenders, Alf Meakin of the same era, was, I think, an Olympian, and played RL for a while with Backpool. Now I'm less sure of this next suggestion, but I think that David Jones, who still holds the World Record at the obscure distance of 150 yard, tried his hand at Rugby League in Australia (but I am relying on a very dodgy old memory, so don't take it as Gospel).

The Leigh sprinter, I'm guessing, was MacDonald Bailey.

If we include second team games, then Chamberlain must be the quickest ever to play a game of RL.

Greg Ashcroft could shift. I will always remember him leaving Clive Sullivan in his wake. No mean feat.

Senior moment on my behalf STR; I meant Chambers. Must be the fastest to have ever played the game, albeit in the second string.

There will be a few Googling Chamberlain, and wondering which one I meant!

I have checked out the best 100m times for B Jones, D Jones, Alf Meakin, MacDonald Bailey and Chambers. (Sad, I know).

Chambers best time is recorded as 9.97 secs, making him the fastest to have played RL.

McDonald 10.2 secs making him probably the fastest to play in a first team game.

Berwyn Jones and David Jones 10.3 seconds, making Berwyn the fastest to play International RL, and the fastest to have a proper career (with Wakefield and Bradford). I'm unsure about David Jones' career, as its just a vague memory I have that he played out in Australia (where is BSJ when you need him!!).

Alf Meakins' best time was recorded at 10.4 seconds.

I don't know about the Hemmings and Ashcrofts of this world, but fast as they were I doubt that they would have been as fast as the above.

MacDonald Bailey's playing career lasted only one game and that was a floodlit friendly against Wigan, so I reckon both he and Chambers should be discounted.

In my book being fast was handy but being able to actually catch the ball was something that eluded many fast players over the years. Watch any of Offiah's games and you will see that he had a fantastic pair of hands and excellent catching ability. This would often give him half a yard start on the opposition which was plenty. He was the best of the fastest in my book.
Believe what you see, don't see what you believe.

Hi BSJ, I hoped that you would be able to put me right as to whether David Jones played RL in Australia. My memory plays tricks on me these days!!

By the way, not only was Berwyn Jones considerably faster on paper ( I know, games are not played on paper), but at a try per match he has a better international strike rate than Martin Offiah. The trouble with statistics, of course, is that they can be misrepresented. Jones only played 3 times for GB, Offiah 33 times.

Alex Potts at Batley is pretty rapid. He was also Wakey's Fastest Man In Super League entry when he were there. His 4 trys at Hunslet last weekend were all results of the lads pace. Unbelievably quick!

Hi Bi11.

No access to Aussie records I'm afraid. Why not try posing the question on one of their fora?
