Close to 100 Rugby League teams will take to the field to compete in the first round of the Vodafone Cup competition.
The National Rugby League development officer says the lack of competition in rugby union had resulted in players and clubs switching codes.
"We have seen a large number of new clubs joining us from last year and the answers they have been giving us have been the same. They say there is less or hardly any properly organised rugby union competition in their communities."

I think there is a real opportunity to develop the game internationally and clean up in the Pacific if the Aussies are prepared to share some of the money they make in the new TV deal. I'm sure they do this already but if they devoted more resources to it they would end up dominating. You could have individual countries for the World Cup and maybe a Pacific Islands team in the 4 Nations.

The progress Fiji have made on the back of the '08 WC has been remarkable.
People need to stop with this idea.I think there is a real opportunity to develop the game internationally and clean up in the Pacific if the Aussies are prepared to share some of the money they make in the new TV deal. I know several NSW Country teams field Fijian nationals who come to Australia as adults for footy and for work in those towns. Tumbarumba in southern NSW and parks in western NSW are chief among them. They have been spotted playing in Fijian domestic competitions. That's fine. But the next link in the chain is to get regular internationals and play many of them in Fiji itself, not just sporadic fixtures played in NSW and Qld. The Fijian RL need sto create more oppourtunites for representatibve progression otherwise this will simply be a more sophisticated Uate-style production for the Kangaroos/Kiwis.
