Over the last few weeks as I have been reading the R.L.Express, I've noticed a name which has cropped up a few times in the Aussie reports on the St. George games. Jake Marketo is the name and of course it got me wondering if he might be related to the one and only Mike who many York fans will remember from a few years back who served us so well in that memorable team we had at the time. On googling the lads name, sure enough, up it came, son of Mike, a former player with Balmain. If Jake's half as good as his dad, I wonder if he fancies following in his dad's footsteps and having a season with us? If only!!
Well there's no harm in dreaming and remembering the good times I suppose.

I can still remember the Leeds forwards, to this day blindly throwing the ball anywhere rather than getting another big hit from Mike.

I also remember that game, what a hard player he was, teams were scared of him, what would we give for a forward like him in the side now, the big hit Kingy put in on that player the other week was the normal tackle from Marketo, awesome memories

The game when Mick Marketo got sent off was at Clarence Street against Featherstone, remember showing the video in the bar at Huntington Stadium in those dark days when we were trying to drum up support for the club which became the Knights.
The Leeds game at Headingley was the first game our Aussie contingent played. If we could have kept them all for the full season and not sold Graham Steadman to Featherstone we would have stayed up..

You used to get some great overseas players back in the day, even when you moved to your current stadium. I always used to wonder how you'd managed to sign guys like Sean McVean and Mark Lyons, who were Winfield Cup regulars when they came over to play for York. Then again, I remember Trafford Borough signing up Steve Mavin and Darren Brown, who were first-team stars at South Sydney! Just wouldn't happen these days!!
What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world: culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog, know what I mean?
