With the recent heart scare with Purtnell, and other heart problems leading to death or life threatening situations on the field or while training (ie Walker, Powell, Muamba & more) do you think ALL players should have cardiac tests before being able to take to the field ?

After all our boys play the toughest sport in the world.

I don't know if my answer is going to sound daft as I don't think that anyone would disagree with measures that would prevent someone dyeing on a sports field.

However, if players were screened and found to have a heart problem then I suspect they would struggle to get any form of insurance to play the game.

Also does anyone know how many people have a Muamba style heart problem, play sport and are never affected by it? I wander how many of the players named would have still played knowing there was a possibility it could kill them, I suspect most of them would still take the risk.

I bet Muamba can't wait to get his boots back on.
For when the one great scorer comes to mark against your name he writes not if you won or lost but how you played the game.

I suspect there are more in the general population than you'd think . I remember a Dewsbury player called John Davies dying on the field in the late sixties/early seventies , who turned out to have a congenital heart condition. They wouldn't have had the technology back then though to detect it. According to recent medical trials, there are significant numbers of people walking arround with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation, which can trigger off heart attacks, particularly during hard exercise. I suppose the message is get yourself checked out, however fit you think you are.

John Davies died in April 1969 at Crown Flatt playing against Batley.

The problems aren't simply congenital but can also be made more acute by a extended periods of exercise, spread over many years. Sadly the outcome is a result of being fit.
Believe what you see, don't see what you believe.
