In last weeks Rugby Leaguer and this weeks,Malcolm Andrews give a mention to a Aussie prop who played for Hunslet and Rochdale,he says Hunslet were expecting a suntanned hulk of a man, they did'nt realise that he was the smallest prop in oz,does anyone remember him?

I have a vague memory of him, it was in the Elland Road days, without checking I'm guessing it would have been about the mid-eighties.
KOL is right though, I have no recollection of him ever doing anything other taking it up as first receiver and going down to the first man. Don't even think he was anything special in defence either.

Played 20 times for us in 1984-85 - so we were in Division One. 0 tries, 0 goals, 0 drop goals, 0 points, quelle surprise ...

Gerry was a really nice guy, used to work with him at Comet on Armley Road together with all the other Aussies and Kiwis (if only we could turn back the clock )- he once told me he never shaved before a game to make himself look more rugged and tougher.
Hawkwindbags stats are about right, can't confirm them as my records at that time were done on analysis paper, and they are now down at the club office to be put on the computer. Another good subject for the Where are they now ? page in the programme.

We once had 2 Aussie trialists who came across who were used to playing on park pitches in the middle of nowhere in Queensland, their names escape me but there was a photo of them in the Evening Post. They came across expecting at the best a small ground with maybe a stand....when they saw Elland Rd with the massive new West Stand they nearly fainted! needless to say i think they only played a couple of games if that.
We did have a Greek guy as well called Theo Anast who maybe played a few games who i thought wasnt much but went on to play 1st grade for Canterbury Bulldogs!

I remember him but was on 11 or 12 then. He didn't stand out as much as Mal Graham, Peter Brown, John Ackland or Glenn Townsend in my memory

Herbie Moore, remember him, he was immense! Don't forget jock mckelvie dannys brother! Who were the aussies/ Aussie that came and got injured and barely played?! Eric Kibe was good for such a deceptively slow man as I remember!

MATT LAMBERT.
Penola I Colin Penola was a Aussie--- another good subject for Pat B's "where are they now? " programme column.
Perhaps Hawyeye could end his excile and confirm this--- Norma H will know she will probably have his home address as well.

When we were at Elland Road we were offered WENDELL SAILOR, who was about 18 at the time, but we couldn't afford the £800 air fare he wanted.
From the overseas players I forgot Ronnie Suliepa, another lad who worked at Comet with me.

the worst ever aussie we had - even worse than Gerry Byrom - well i nominate an overweight, overhear so called prop forward by the name of Brett Walsh and aidy jinks will back me up on this, who was absolute garbage.
We also had a little aussie full bk called Bob Grant when we played at McClaren Field Bramley who wasnt much better and ended up at Batley.
So in order of the KOL,s worst ever overseas players awards the nominees are
1 Brett Walsh
2 Gerry Byrom
3 Ricky Lulham
4 Bob Grant

The name Bob Grant still makes me shudder KOL. Whats worse is that we actually paid you a transfer fee for him. A truly horrible player.

Matt Lambert I stand corrected ff! Yeah I remember bob grant! Just looking at the list of names mentioned... I wish I had a pound for every time Paul Carr scored from close range taking 2 or 3 over with him from dummy half...!
