D-Day Looms! (Derby)
Oldham v Rochdale is an hotly contested derby but this seasons has derby promises to be a fiery affair with both teams battling for the last promotion place.
Rochdale have already grabbed the dragging rights following their 18 - 10 defeat of Oldham at Spotland. it could be said that loss starting Oldhams epic slide from the top spot in the championship to mid table obscurity.
Oldham have suffered from an injury crisis of massive proportions during the first of the season and with some much at stake the club must halt this unacceptable slide away from the promotion places.
If you believed in fate, then surely you would say we are not destined for promotion (again) after a fabulous start to the season, we suffered injury after injury that forced us into loan signing and dual registrations of young players. The suspension of Jamie for three matches and the loss of Neil Roden has clearly dented the prospect of promotion. The players have played with passion and commitment and nobody can fault the physical efforts of the players and the collection of bonus points shows the team are not too far off the pace.
But can Oldham really turn it around and grab the fourth promotion place?
Oldham have languished in the bottom tier for far too long and this season was the ideal opportunity to force ourselves into the Championship.
The real question is whether the current top four teams are within the salary cap but would the Rugby League allow any promoted team to stay in the champion if it is established they have breached the salary cap rules?
Credit must be given to any sporting club who operate within a budget and I understand Oldham are attempting to run their business within a sustainable framework but sometimes we have to take a risk to increase the possibility of climbing the ladder but rugby league clubs losing money, just look at Bradford Bulls.
Promotion comes with serious financial problems with regards to ground improvements and squad strengthening, is the ground going to be improved if promotion is obtained or are we going to develop the ground slowly and look to build a squad to compete in the next level.
Can Oldham Win on Sunday, Yes of course they can but can Oldham grab promotion, as a supporter I would say “YES” but in reality I think we may miss out again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you have any particular one of the top four clubs in mind re. salary cap, Oldham13?
I remember when .............................
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

I am really looking forward to the Roughyeds vs Hairnets game. Both sides have struggled recently but hopefully with the players Oldham have brought in and those coming back from injury we will reverse the result earlier in the season. With Whitehaven away the week after it's a make or break situation but I strongly believe we have a squad good enough and strong enough to go on and pinch 4th spot. We have to win two more than Haven! It's a big ask so lets get behind the lads!

Anyone know what the pitch is like? any danger of the match being called off.

I've heard the pitch is a bit heavy but as long as there is no downpour today we'll be OK. certainly the slope helps for once.I think a very close game too close to call. heard on the grapevine there's also blanket testing this weekend across Ch and CH1 and other sports as a training session for the Olympic testers.
One for all and all for the one

am looking forward to the game today-should be a real battle in testing conditions.Need big games from everyone in an Oldham shirt.Have to :avoid giving away early (daft) points ; have forwards running onto the ball instead of taking the ball stood still -we seem to leave this until the last 15 minutes when we`re playing catch-up ;backs ,errr, backing up;make ground with longer touch-finding,esp from penalties.Am pleased that we might see Noone and Smith (Paul)back .But at the end,all we ask is for everyone to do their best , and that, along with the individual talent we have, should see us with a win-22-12,at a guess !! Come on,Oldham -you will do it !!

About the only redeeming aspect of this game is that I'm listening to it while lying in the sun drinking an ice cold beer!
