At the age of 63, I have recently gone self-employed as a landscape gardener and enjoying it very much (apart from the weather). I still have lots to look forward to, health permitting. Other people young and old give out the message that life is always downbeat. Obviously, there are many problems in the wide world, but why give up if you are able to move forward in a positive manner.
Is the world still shinning brightly for you, or forever under a dark cloud and seemingly no way out?

At a spritely 28, I'm certainly looking forward but I think in your situation I will still be optimistic for the future. People often mistake me for being negative but in my head I'm the eternal optimist and I very rarely feel down. For instance from September to February I was effectively unemployed but apart from the odd financial concern, it never got me down and I dare say that I quite enjoyed it.
To me there just seems to be so much to do and so much to learn. The one thing that gets to me is lack of time to do what I want to, this will probably get worse as I get older!

I look back with great fondness and look forward to a great future. It's just the here and now that's a right pain in the ######.

I blame the RFL, it's a farce.

The only major concern I have is not having enough time to do everything I want!
Money can't buy happiness... but it can buy bacon which is close enough.

Look back, or look forward?

People in retirement often say I 'don't know how I found the time to work'. In truth, people just fill their time up with other activities. Certain people will look for more and more things to do simply to tell people how 'exhausted' they are. How many times have you heard people say to others 'sorry but I haven't the time to help?'

I have an odd habit of looking back on times in my life that were pretty bad with a sort of rose tinted specs. As though it wasn't all that bad, when in fact it was.
I also used to waste today by aiming for tomorrow until certain events happened. I'm also in a bit of a 'depressed' state due to almost all my kids being grown up and can't believe its gone so quickly.

I once heard a theory that the working class and upper class all enjoy their lives but the middle class are too consumed with striving to better themselves to enjoy life"
I dunno about defining people by 'class' but Im certainly guilty of the striving bit, or have been for too long
(Im also terrified of getting old and especially death but at least I can look back and appreciate Ive had a decent life)
Glad to hear youve found a new path, Ray

Thanks but no thanks.
There you see, Geordie Saint has put a smile on your face. My missus has told me that I must clean behind the beds just before I pop my clogs . LOL.

What, in bed, in such agony that you have to be doped up, and surrounded by distraught family members?

Of course, while one is still able and well.

Whilst I understand the general point of this saying I've always found it quite confusing and pressuring. How exactly do you live each day like it is your last? Are you supposed to jump out of a plane every day or something?

For me, it means make the most of what you have and try to be upbeat. Some people never do anything apart from spread doom and gloom which never cures anything.

The future and the past are both illusions in our minds; they do not exist.
Live in the present and be content and take a pride in what you are doing at this very moment.
All else is futile and does not make one happy.
